The Savinelli 'P-Lip' is quite different from Peterson's. I actually like it (while I really do not like the one from Peterson).
It reminds me of the Hardcastle patent dental bit; I have an estate "Jockey Club" with one, which I also find difficult to get along with.

IMG_7294.jpegThis Tre Smooth shape 601 is on its way to me. I just love this line of pipes. I’ve been smoking a lot of briar this year and I almost always reach for a Savinelli Tre pipe.

I think in my 6th year of pipe smoking I’ve actually found a briar brand/line that I’m interested in collecting a little bit.

Also got a Savinelli Roma Lucite 804 Canadian 6mm recently. Love the Canadian shape....as is an 803 KS Champagne smooth I got sometime during the last century. See photo.

BTW.....I bought a couple of Savinelli's the past couple of weeks & paid extra $62 & $76 in tariffs/carrier charges!!
Wazzup??

Ok I thought I was over my bent Rhodesian obsession and even though I already took out my " restorer's tax" pipes from the lats batch, i just kept looking at this at this pipe I just have to keep it... Especially since I can't seem to find any information on the line, it makes even more irresistible... If anyone knows anything about it please let me know. Al i found is that it is high grade similar to Dunhill's Ring grain, but even that is somewhat anecdotal.. While I was taking the photos i failed to notice the stamp on the gold band - at first i thought it was gold plated, but it turns out to be 18k golden band instead

That’s a gorgeous example of a Savinelli Gold! I bought a 114KS Gold a few years ago that was listed as a Punto Oro Gold (it’s not technically a Punto Oro, Golds are their own series). It was new (legacy stock from the 1970s to 90s). I was curious so I corresponded with Savinelli. They were a little confused at first then after some research, they told me that the Gold series were a high grade series along the lines of the Punto Oro, Autograph, and Giubileo. They also said the Gold series is the line from which the Punto Oros descended.

Some of them came with 18k bands (and stingers, such as yours), others came with no band and a stingerless filtered or non-filtered stem. From what I’ve seen, they all came with two gold dots in the stem. They are all beautiful, high grade pipes - most with incredible grain. Enjoy it!!!

“They also said the Gold series is the line from which the Punto Oros descended.”

I don’t believe this is accurate. More like the reverse. The Punto Oro line first appeared in 1958 after the factory was built. Initially there was a smooth red finish and dark sandblasted; the 18k Gold pipes with two dots are from much later, probably the 1990s. There are two dot Punto Oro pipes, but I’m not sure why—I’ve only seen them on Corallo di Mare finished pipes.

I certainly don't know enough to argue the validity of what Savinelli told me in that email, but it's always interesting to find when companies don't fully know the history of their own lines. I can say when I purchased my Gold from SP, they said the batch of them (I think they had about 50-100 Punto Oro Gold pipes and two or three just "Gold" stamped pipes in the lot), had been located in storage at the Savinelli factory warehouse. Savinelli couldn't put a date on when the lots were placed into storage but they said all of the pipes were manufactured between the 1970s and 1990s. These were all sold off between about 2021 and 2023 as "Legacy Stock" on the SP US and EU websites.

Once I received my pipe, I went on a mission to find out as much as I could about that line...and there just wasn't much info out there. Savinelli told me the Punto Oro line accounts for approximately 1.5% of the total production per annum and the Punto Oro Gold is much less than that...they added the line marked just "Gold" without Punto Oro would have been even a smaller percentage than both the Punto Oro and Punto Oro Gold, adding they were "hand picked" to get the "Gold" label. I have no way of knowing if all that is 100% correct, but it's certainly interesting.

To confuse the masses even more, here's a link to a beautiful Savinelli on SP (sold) that has no series stamp but is a Silver Two Dot version of the Golds. The finish and ring grain appear equal and it's a stunning example of what Savinelli can/could put out.

No one has bought a pipe from Italy or Germany recently & experienced "customs problems"? I paid a customs duty/tariff on a Savinelli pipe from their Italy website. I also bought a pipe from an online tobacco store in Germany. DUMB!! Short story: after 1 month filling out complicated DHL carrier forms for customs in NYC (& approved by DHL), pipe sent back to Germany. Stupid!! It looks like I'm confined to USA!! Is that the purpose of the administration's tariff? I succumb.
