I have 3.
View attachment 332211

All 3 have small (group 2-3) oval chambers. They definitely DO NOT have large(r) surface areas - just differently shaped ones

Ah, interesting, so they just take a round bowl and squeeze it down into an oval. Makes sense if the goal is to reduce printing when put into a pocket.

Your middle pipe is particularly good looking. Is that a Barling?

I can’t make out the stamping. Need to note it in my rapidly expanding PAD list.

Well spotted.
The middle one is indeed a 1913 Barling.
Unfortunately the previously owner had rotated the silver olive so the stamps are facing the wrong way

I bought a Castello Perla Nera Kk shape 55 which, I think, might count as an opera pipe, though I am unsure because I don’t attend the opera and know the customs associated with it.
Anyway here it is … a fantastic smoker!castello-shape-55-perla-nera-kk--7.jpegcastello-shape-55-perla-nera-kk--6.jpegcastello-shape-55-perla-nera-kk--7.jpegcastello-shape-55-perla-nera-kk--6.jpegcastello-shape-55-perla-nera-kk--7.jpegcastello-shape-55-perla-nera-kk--6.jpeg

That's certainly a pipe that would fit in an opera setting.

What I think makes an opera is an oval bowl and oval chamber. Castello's shape 44 used to have both but the modern ones unfortunately have a round chamber.

Just arrived. Custom ordered from Glenn Tinsky ( American Smoking Pipes ) . Inspiration was the Castello shape 44. Landed at my door cost was under $200.00. Yes, you can still get a custom made pipe for a very reasonable price.

The 320 has ivorite on the shank, right? Very handsome

Had to look up the difference and saw one example that @alaskanpiper posted in a different thread. Do all 320s come with the screw in tenon?
Mine doesn't have a screw in tenon but there is the white band between the shank and stem that's some kind of animal material. Could be ivory or bone or something else but pretty clearly not a synthetic material.

1. Many of them (including mine) are actual ivory, not ivorite.

2. It actually wasn’t a screw in tenon, it was a regular push tenon, but they had attached the accent ring to the stem using a screw tenon-like device that came unglued and was easily repaired back to a functional one piece push tenon stem.

Hope that helps!

This thread triggered my PAD so badly that I couldn’t resist picking up this Longchamp opera pipe.

The leather is in excellent condition, but it’s got a pretty thick cake which needs work. Also, I’ve never smoked a pipe with a stinger, so I’m curious if I will like it or have to remove it.
