Show Us Your Flamboyant or Odd Pipes

I mentioned it in a post in WAYS and thought it might make a fun thread.

Occsaionally everyone needs a pipe that goes over the top. Lets see it. Preferably one that you smoke, not just bought becuase it was weird...but thats fine too.

This is about the outter limits for me.

A beauty! Viprati is good for that. Here's mine, i'm split on the extreme curvature, but it has a certain elegance and smokes like a champ. Typically smoke

VA or burley blends in this one.



And here's one i sold recently due to the fact i very rarely smoked it (by Chris Layton):

Was for me, too. So it got culled in a recent thinning of the herd.

Well, this pipe would fall into the "odd" category.....

For about 25 years I did American Civil War reenacting as a mounted cavalryman. It was a wonderful experience to see how people dressed, lived, ate, etc. 160 years ago and to do it from horseback only added to the whole thrill. That said, I commissioned a period pipemaker to make a pipe for me that not only used authentic materials but was inscribed with etchings and battle honors of the unit that we portrayed (7th Tennessee Cavalry, Co. D.).

Here are some pictures. It has a stem of peach wood along with a portion of antler and then the vulcanite mouthpiece. Note the horseshoe around the top of the bowl.

I saw a couple of these a year (or two?) ago and thought about buying one, but never pulled the trigger. I loved the little gold viruses.

This is my only pipe I that would say qualifies as odd (definitely odd). And that I bought strictly for that very reason...odd and bizarre in a way that appealed to me (and the price was right) ... a Yanik, of course. Only gets smoked on rare occasions...but I like looking at it.

There is a werner mummert on ebay right now. Its gonna go for more than Im willing to pay. Its kind of fun but I think Id rather put the money on something a little more traditional. Its one of his geometric shapes. It also looks very uncomfortable to hold.

Here's the rest of the story. I hope it makes you feel better.....

This is a Limited Edition with only 70 made. It was made for the Italy Market and created as a dedication to the men and women of Italy on the front lines helping to save lives from Covid. The Pipe is called "Virus" and they came in almost every finish and grade that Castello offers and are adorned with not only a thick Sterling Silver band but also two 18KT solid gold models of the Covid virus. This is one is a Sea Rock.

Yes, but I was convinced that they had done it with the best intentions, but it still seems like an unfortunate idea to me.
Personal opinion, obviously.
Nothing to say about the pipe, it remains a Castello.
