My favourite tamper is below. It is a Larry Roush sterling silver tamper. What I love about this tamper is the angled end, which allows you to tamp down along the side of tobacco in the bowl, while leaving the middle of the bowl untamped an conical. I find this gives me a far better smoke and a beautiful even burn around the pipe.
Now here's a better shot of the one tamper I got in England - it depicts a woman's hand holding . . . I dunno ... maybe a cigar ... your guess is as good as mine.
I carry one in my pocket too for on the go, but when I'm at home I prefer something a bit nicer, we have nice pipes why not nice tampers too, if you are happy with the pipe tool more power to ya.
This is my favorite tamper. I made it a couple of weeks ago from an old antler from a spike buck, then embedded the cartridge rim from the first deer I shot years ago. I never knew how handy a beveled tamper could be...go around the bowl with it, then tamp gently with the flat.
I use a simple piece of wood I did on the lathe once. The other is the ugliest sloppily carved piece of stick, a czech tool I lost. Sometimes a lip chap stick.
