I do love a silver cap-not lucky enough to own one. But, wind caps never appealed to me. Perhaps because I only smoke in our den in a comfortable chair reading or listening to music with no prevailing wind.;)

This one has silver in the cap but briar as well. Steve Fallon sold it to me with this description:

"As a tribute to its late founder, Giancarlo Guidi (d. 2012), Ser Jacopo introduced the “Historica” series to honor a few of his most creative and influential contributions to both the company and the “Pesaro School,” consisting of pipe makers trained by him. One of these is a replica of the pipe you see here, a piece Guidi called “The DOME.” A Coral Dot era Rare L3 Maxima. Made shortly after Ser Jacopo founding in 1983, the originality of this piece is attested by the true coral dot surrounded by a silver circle stem logo. The replicas have the silver J stem logo that was adopted in 1997."

"The most prominent feature of the pipe is, of course the dome (it latches open and shut perfectly, and is a precursor of the somewhat more commonly seen “Mangia Fuoco” (smoke eater) used, for example, on their version of the Captain Warren style pipe. This particular cap is fashioned from a smooth briar center surrounded by sterling silver. Night and day, it is more functional and performs better than other wind screen designs because of the space allowed between the top of the screen and the tobacco chamber. . And even today, few are produced.

Unlike the replicas, which have a round shank, this piece is characterized by a playfully designed shank that is round on the top and faceted underneath.

"The replicas are characterized by a narrow silver wedding band. This piece has a wide band, drawing on the existing artisan silver smith tradition of Guidi’s birthplace and home, Pesaro, on the Adriatic coast. The mouthpiece is a work of art, too, and hand cut and finished perfectly.

"The L3 grade was only used in the earliest years of the company. Now there are only two numbered smooth grades, L1 and L2. What were L3’s became Emerald Gem Lines. In every respect, the grain on this piece is indisputably Gem Line quality."

Steve's description sold me on it. It's the only pipe I have with a wind cap. I saw a couple Peterson pipes with wind caps a few years back and almost got one...still on the lookout for another someday.

Sterling wind caps look beautiful, but in practice they are a pain in the ass. With the lid closed the pipe smokes hot unless one smokes super slowly. They make the pipe heavier, open, the cap is in the way, and they make the pipe more difficult to clean.

Other than that, they’re great!
I was wondering about that and was about to ask, so thank you for answering all of my questions.

But they look so cool when you are walking onto your yacht or tootling around in your roadster

Actually I wouldn’t know as I have neither 😁
