She's still a maiden for now, think I'll start the break-in tomorrowHave you popped her cherry yet?
I had one of the Rattray's mortars and mine cracked as well. When I sent it back for a refund the guy at the shop said they'd had a lot of problems with them cracking. Must've been a bad batch.
I'm near sure someone posted here a while ago about Peterson cancelling or recalling their mortas for the same reason, maybe bog-oak isn't the best materialI had one of the Rattray's mortars and mine cracked as well. I've had 2 and they both cracked. The first was the Rattray's and the second was a Volkan. I smoked them real slowly and gently but it made no difference. I've had my eye on one of the Chacom Pipe Of The Year 2019 but my previous experience has made me wary. They are lovely looking pipes, though.I'm near sure someone posted here a while ago about Peterson cancelling or recalling their mortas for the same reason, maybe bog-oak isn't the best material
I have several mortas - no problem with them except for one which developed a couple of “burn” spots. Pipe mud fixed that problem.I'm near sure someone posted here a while ago about Peterson cancelling or recalling their mortas for the same reason, maybe bog-oak isn't the best material
This is amazing!I've got a Rattray's meerschaum that was a team up between them and Eldritch Pipes. Eldritch made the beautiful stem. Looks a bit different now, of course. It's got a decent bit of colour on it.

I love the yule pipe.I bought a Rattray's 2024 Yule pipe, smooth finish, as one of my Christmas presents. It smoked really good but the finish bubbled and the logo peeled off the stem, so I sent it back to smokingpipes and received a full refund.
I replaced it by buying a sandblast Rattray's 2024 Yule pipe from smokingpipes.eu. It also broke in real easy and is a good smoker. The sandblast actually looks better than the smooth one did.

Thank you my friend for your helpI have a couple pots, one is a sitter (which sanding the bottom flat made it a wee bit thin at the bottom of the smoking chamber) - they both started to develop hot spots at the bottom. Instead of pipe mud (baccy ash/water) i tried pipe cement (wood burning ash/water). I've used pipe mud on cobs in the past but after reading a thread here that claimed pipe cement has a quicker cure time and makes a harder finished product, i decided to give it a shot and voila. Worked out well thus far.

So you probably know what pipe mud is. If you don't it's pipe ash mixed with water (or saliva) to form a paste. This paste is used in a pipe chamber to fill defects and change the chamber geometry (usually in the bottom). This can be used to fill a sandpit on the inside of a chamber, raise the...pipesmagazine.com
Anyhoo, here's my singular Rattrays pipe. An olive wood with 2 stems:
