Unless you are incredibly careless, you won't damage it. My 2021 POY is one of my favorite POY pipes.Because I’m mortified to burn it out or damage it.![]()
I can think of only one worse case - A great pipe not fulfilling it’s life purpose, while it’s owner gets tortured daily with having to convince himself that it’s not worth to smoke it.Because I’m mortified to burn it out or damage it.![]()
Smoke it with joy! The black sandblast is going to be incredibly resilient showing wear. But even if it is was a smooth natural, you can't ruin those hearty dutch billiards.Because I’m mortified to burn it out or damage it.![]()

My friend. That’s a great looking pipe. Smoke it. It’s a pipe. I routinely smoke every pipe in my collection. The oldest age wise is from 1886. The bulk of my pipes are from between WWI and WWII. Your pipe will be fine you’ll enjoy it mote. The pride and joy of my entire collection! I finally recently got my hands on a Peterson 2021 POTY. The 4AB made famous by Basil Rathbone smoking it in his Sherlock Holmes Movies of the 1940s. It’s been my dream pipe to own since I got into pipe smoking and collecting. I got is as an unsmoked estate, and I believe it will probably only ever be smoked once.

Wow, a 999 with condenser, awesome! Here’s a follow up the Peterson Deluxe N/L. Would still love to figure out what that N over L means. They’re all “Made in Ireland” Block Format. They all have condensers (one is missing). They all either have white paint in the lettering or remnants of it.
I’ll finish cleaning the externals. I cleaned the internals and they are first when reconditioning pipes. Then I’ll smoke them.
Here are all four.

The N/L stamp is curious - an owners initials? Seems like they would put that on the other side. If feels like a factory stamp. Check with Mark Irwin.
Update - Google shows the NL was used only on Deluxe pipes, but no explanation as to why. I have/had several Deluxe Petersons but not yet encountered the NL.
Lost to time.I asked Mark. He knows about the N/L just didn’t know how or what it means.
