You are a good friend to trade for such a horrid pipe 😆
I like the shape and that it is a spigot, that will do for now... At least my guy is a very happy camper and he looks to his other pipes now through a completely different lense.
Btw does anyone know what happened to the premier line?!? It used to be a better grade than the De Luxe and now, in the modern catalog, it's barely more expensive than the standards... Any Idea when did that change?

From someone who works at the factory. "The Premier line was never better than De Luxe. It was a bridge between System Standard, and De Luxe. Basically, System Standards with slightly better bowls, silver mounts instead of nickel, and vulcanite P-Lip instead of acrylic. It's kinda like how we have Newgrange for instance, that's a better blast than standard blast, but also not a De Luxe, but upgraded with silver."

The early republic, or pre-republic ones I have seen, have almost always been perfect and better than most De Luxes from the same era. At least in my eyes.

This description fits the star system better in my opinion.

Sooooooo. My first Pete was a Newgrange XL90 that i bought at one of the fairly recent Smokingpipes sales.

Pete NG KC Flake.JPG

Loved the look and feel. Especially dug the spigot vs the dark stain. And the muted reds with the blacks and browns in the stem material were more appealing to my tastes than the brighter reds in the Dracula line. Personal preference. Bowl size was decent, although i'd like it even bigger, if possible. I'm not a fan of thin bowl walls, due to smoking a lot of flakes, and so i was always checking dimensions of chamber bore vs outter diameter to ensure thick enough walls when choosing this model. This would be about my minimum threshold.

Problem was on day 3, smoke 3, it started a burnout on me. A pit formed in the chamber and an ashy discoloration occurred on the exterior of the bowl corresponding to that spot.

Pete Bowl Failure 3.JPG

I sent it back, they determined it was a weak spot in the briar - it happens - and since they have a refund policy on damaged goods, rather than replacement, i got my money back. But by this time the sale was over, and i couldn't bring myself to pay more money for the same pipe.

So i bought a System Deluxe PSB 3s with P-Lip from a fine member here to give that direction a shot instead.

Pete Dlx PSB.JPG

Again, beautiful pipe, still liked the stem set-up, although i thought the spigot was nicer. Bowl size on this one turned out to be a little small for me and then the cleaning of the dry well, in addition to the p-lip and draught hole was a bit of a chore. I know: whine, whine. Anyway, i didn't reach for it often enough and turned that one around, too.

So now, to my question for the Pete geeks. With said details in mind, any suggestions on a direction i should look in the future when considering trying for the 3rd time, a Peterson pipe?

Sorry, I meant "horrid" sarcastically! That spigot is lovely 🤩

If you're wanting more briar in your hand you can look at the 2s or B42. Good size chambers. Even the 20s is larger and that's one of my fav's.

Short answer: get yourself a Hunter.
Very easy to maintain, dark blast, interesting design, extremely comfortable, fishtail acrylic stem, very generous bowl and affordable.

Long answer: it's hards since you are not a fan of the well, but a meer might fit you well or if you find something in your price range from the 60s or 70s you shouldn't have to deal with any quality issues. Also maybe a xl90/9s shape? This newer army model snuck up on me and I find myselft enjoying it almost daily.

Also I am working on a pre republic 9s deluxe right now, which would be perfect, although it's a different price range , but I am not sure if I will be able to revive the stem, or if I will have look for a replacement...

Yeah, dump the gloves, your not Sotheby's 😂 working hands are much better! I'm not saying gloves are a bad idea, I should use them myself more. My hands are pretty much covered with stain sometimes when I'm careless, but I'm getting better at that.
Two problems with that - I smoke while I work and I don't want to touch my pipes with such dirty hands; also with my other business I have to be somewhat presentable for fancy people😬 Also alcohol dries out my skin like crazy and if I get an extra stubborn restoration or repair my hands get in a bad shape for days, if my skin was dry.

Just busting your chops, wear all the gloves you like!

Noted. Will take a look at some of these. When i get back home i've got some more culling to do -- maybe 15-20 pipes -- and then i'll try another Pete. And maybe a couple other things before i wrap the show up. ;)

That's not a bad looking model there. I'm all about comfort, ease of use, etc. I don't like to be too fussy about my pipes. Just want them to sing when i put in the pipe weed and deliver a sweet ride. That's it. Simple. EZ. Voila type chit.

Too many meers as it is, although i don't have an African one yet.

Yep, the Newgrange was an XL90, as posted above. It was kind of my minimum threshold for bowl size in terms of capacity and wall thickness. So i'd consider that again, but would be happier with something a little more generous, if possible. Another Newgrange is certainly not out of the question either. I'll just wait till a few of them hit the estate market.

Also, feel free to hit me up about the 9s you've got going on. I'd be happy to check it out.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys. I'm pent up in a hospital room with a view of where i'd rather be and a bag full of tobacco with a few meers at my side but am supposed to stay on the floor. So might get a little more chatter outta me than usual. No apologies in advance.

As he mentioned liking spigots, I'd recommend a B42 system spigot. I have a rusticated one and the darker stain is a good complement to all the silver of the spigot. It's my second favorite pipe.
You can't just say it's your second favourite pipe, without telling us what your number one is.... or better yet photos
