just in one week I went from not being able to find a Meerschaum pipe that works for me and I like, to finding too many…🤦‍♂️
Here is the new addition to the collection:

I still don’t know what brand it is… looks like an Altinay but the stem looks exactly like a Manger, but I’ve never seen a manger Meer in this style🤷

Lattice finishes are a common theme in meerschaum carving. That one outclasses every Altinay I've seen. If you like that sort of thing, Mehmet Fatih is very good at it.

Stunning pipe🤩
Thank you for the info, I agree that it looks better than most Altinays, but it is a very big pipe and bigger Altinays , I’ve noticed are carved better.
Any idea what this one could be?

It is brand new and if I have to be completely honest it looks like the cheapest pressed Meer ever - being all mirror polished. This being said, it is a bit weird for this to be the only very cheap pipe among all the others… there are no markings on it what so ever

It could be by one of the new guys. Some extremely well done meerschaum pipes have been done by apprentices with no nomenclature. I had a massive 14 inch long mountain lion pipe that had no indication of who carved it.

Alright, I’m not that deep in my Meerschaum knowledge… yet.
Care to elaborate?(if you feel comfortable sharing and it doesn’t break any forum rules, that I’ve forgotten)

If I'm going to drop a couple of hundred dollars on a pipe, I don't want carelessly overlooked imperfections brushed away like they're nothing. I received a broken pipe from Sadik Yanik last year and he offered to replace it with no additional charge.

I don’t completely agree with the sentiment that if something is expensive, then absolutely no errors are allowed, but yes some kind of compensation is almost a must if you value your reputation. I had a “similar” situation a while back, when a client bought a leather-clad estate pipe, which was already quite old. Although it was completely restored, including the leather, he was warned to smoke it with a bit of extra care. One hot bowl of a dry Virgina and another even hotter one with a sticky aromatic, in the same day mind you, and the leather shrunk… I get a complaint the next day, to which I answered with a very friendly explanation of what exactly happened and how it’s not my or the pipe’s fault, bet then I added the lowest level of compensation I could offer - a 15€ discount on his next purchase. This might almost sound as a cop out, but keep in mind his first pipe was 70€ and I had 0 blame for the issue - still managed to adjust his frown by at least a fraction. Bigger companies/ pipe makers can afford much better.

I have been wanting a meerschaum pipe for the longest time and I have had a few, but they always felt like a gimmick to me. Maybe it was the crazy designs or just the very small bowl sizes I ended up with, but I would just never smoke them.
Today this ends up- I finally found something that feels just right! The size is perfect, the shape is perfect and it is an army mount with a silver olive…

At this point I just have to decide if I should try to clean up the dark rim and get fresh start or just leave it.

I recently saw a Meer here, with an absolutely gorgeous peach coloured sunset coloration - any pro tips on how to achieve that? Any other Meer tip would be greatly appreciated too!
That’s a beautiful pipe. Leave it like it is.

New Ali pencil shank brandy that I have had my eyes on for a loooong time, I believe at least a year? Got it for a song thanks to a nice sale/offer from the lovely pipesdepot.
Quite long at 7.5 inches, sporting a decent 1.5 inch chamber depth, and a nice .75 inch chamber diameter.
Super pleasant rounded mouth piece to fit the small, thin shank.
This (I hope) is the last smaller depth pipe I’ll grab, as I have found after many years that I really enjoy a deep pipe over a shallower one. I’m sure it’ll be a real pleasure to smoke and watch color once my health improves.

Another recent acquisition. A cased Genuine Meerschaum & Amber bulldog. I can’t prove it, but I feel like the pre-colored meerschaums were probably popular before 1900. I base that on stems and bit styles.
They also don’t show up later in any of the ads or catalog pages I’ve seen.

Am a novice collector of Meerschaums, less than 3 months acquaintance. Your reference to "pre-colored meerschaums" piqued my interest. Looking at the pipe above it has a gorgeously natural looking color, with depth between lighter and darker tones, something I would have thought only developed naturally over years- is there any sort of "pre-coloring" that results in a white block of Meerschaum looking like the pipe above? And if not, what kind(s) of pre-coloring on pre 1900 Meerschaums were there?

That particular pipe would have had a very dark oxblood stain. These pipes actually lost color as they were smoked.. or maybe the dye is affected by the heat. Here’s a couple I used to own.

Thank you. I had no idea Meerschaum could be so attractively and convincingly stained. I had seen new Turkish Meerschaum in a color resembling plastic wood filler, a sort of yellow tan, advertising they had received coats of a tinted beeswax. But the dark 'ox blood' stained pipe- very beautiful- I would have erroneously attributed the color to years and years of use. How little I knew!

You have me thinking that the pipe I'm posting, far from exhibiting eons of resinous staining from tobacco, is actually a pre-colored Meerschaum. It has what you described in an old post as an almost "ceramic" look...

That is a very nice figural pipe. The color is so perfectly even that I suspect it is colored. I’m not sure if the high gloss is due to polishing or some other treatment.
