Wow, that A Grade is fantastic, you don't see many A's.

Very nice paulfg! You don't see many "S" grade pipes (usually P's). I'm terrible on dating Upshalls, neverbend and kbarnes are the experts.

hopfully one of them will be along sometime with there thoughts.

This is my first upshall pipe.I am pretty new to piping and started with a petersons 303 then a couple of deluxe petes (now sold),I have recently been aquireing some Barling pipes both pre and transition periods.

I am not a collector as such but would like to get some good smokers in my rotation and had read good things re Upshall pipes so decided to see what its all about

quote in another topic posted by Ken Barnes

"S" = originally a German orange/red finish. German distributor wanted the exclusive so we changed to a bright, deep red, with natural bowl, as the "S"
I assume this is the colour of my pipe shown above.

When did this colour change occur as it would help date my pipe.

just got another tilshead pipe,it was listed as a 1980 pipe it has only tilshead england on one side and handmade on the other no JU markings at all and listed as no fills.

I thought they were seconds with some cosmetic flaws.

I knew that James Upshall made their version of the "Countryman" but I've never seen one before. A buddy picked this one up yesterday from Smokingpipes.com. I have the Charatan version. These are large pipes, mine is over 90 grams and I suspect this one is as well.

An XL "DS" bent, which Mr. Ken Barnes just informed me to be a B grade sold by the tobacconist Desmond Sautter.
