That’s a Custom, made to a higher standard than the regular pipes. Hand-picked cobs, more careful assembly and finishing. Within the custom series there were some variations, that’s not the highest grade but all the Customs are good smokers. I think they date to the 60s - 70s.
Thanks for the info, I had a feeling it was better quality than most. I've seen quite a few cobs in antique shops and most looked over used or poor quality to begin with, so I wouldn't think about picking one of those up unless it was from a brand other than MM. It's interesting how there used to be a few cob brands but they all folded and now MM is a monopoly. My Country Gentleman smokes wonderfully now that it's broken in but I rarely use it because I find it too bulky to clench, this Custom is perfectly light. I'll probably use it mostly for straight VAs because of the bowl dimensions and because the briar I traded it for was my straight VA pipe.

I bought this MM Legend and didn’t realize it was made for a 6MM filter. I smoked it with and without a filter and thought it smoked horribly both ways. I picked up this Forever Stem from Vermont Freehand and it now smokes wonderfully.

I keep considering the Vermont freehand forever stems for my cobs—and keep reading mixed reviews of them here. Some, like you, love them. Others complain of gurgling, size, etc. guess I’ll have to try them myself. My plastic stems are getting pretty chewed up and several have cracked
