Makes sense, those are some impressive collections. My wife would kill me if she started finding dresser draws and cabinets filling up with tobacco like that.

I have a separate cabinet in my basement for it, that and mine has no idea what is new or not even when she does see some stuff.

But why have such a large amount of pipe tobacco on hand. Are yall prepping for the apocalypse.
In a way yes. As you're a new member you'll read there are various reasons for the stockpiling.
Some "cellar" for aging tobacco purposes, there are many threads in the tobacco discussion area that talk about the opinions of the effects of aging on certain types of tobacco.
Lots are anticipating the fact the recent FDA wanting to get their grubby little paws on further regulation of cigars and pipe tobacco. Further regulation just means increased pricing in the future, plus it also may mean some blends may be discontinued because pipe tobacco manufacturers will have to submit blends introduced after 2/2007 for FDA testing, which is rumored to be very costly. They may just decide it's cost prohibitive to keep making it and stop all together. It's been dubbed by many here the "Tobacopolypse" so many are stockpiling their current blends while it's reasonably priced AND available.
Search the forums for FDA and you'll see a bunch of threads that talk about it in detail. Anyway..welcome to the hobby, and start stocking up. :puffy:

Here is my cellar now. I added some close ups so that newer pipers can identify the blends. I only own a few pipes: An Ashton 2nd Canadian, Poul Winslow Grad C paneled Danish, and a Brian Ruthenberg 1/2 bent blast. I am having a few other pipes commissioned though.

@ hiplainsdrifter - that is an amazing cellar, if you ever feel like parting with a bag of Stonehaven let me know because I'd buy one from ya.
@ ghost - I like your idea of having your cellar in your workshop. Looks awesome.

Thanks elliot, will do. It is more Stonehaven than I need obviously but I plan to hold on to it for now. It took some work to find that much, but it can be found if you want! I just found a few more bags last week. I try not to have more than a pound of tobacco opened and jarred- I guess that way if I keel over my wife can get rid of it a lot easier! :P

smorgdonkey, look for blends that you see in various larger cellars. Those are your winners.
ghost- what's on top of the Marlin Flake?

The bags are Esoterica Stonehaven and Penzance. I agree, these threads would be a lot more useful if you could tell what the blends are- especially a problem for the canning jars.

Esoterica blends are very popular, especially Stonehaven and Penzance. They don't make that much of it so it is hard to get. They release it about twice a year, if you pay attention you should have no problem getting some.

shelf-150x92.jpg

The merger beginnings of my cellar. Right now I am only using about and 1/16th of the shelf space on this wall. I am slowly going to take it over and before my wife knows it I'll have the whole three shelves’ taking over.

I used to only order enough to get a me trough a few months and I also didn't smoke as much as I have been lately, so this is new for me. It's been a lot of fun though and I plan to keep going, especially considering the FDA proposals. I think I'm sitting around 13 pounds currently.

Daimyo, I see you have some McCranie's Red Ribbon hiding in there- I love that stuff, it has so much depth for being a single crop red Virginia. Have you had a chance to try crops of different vintages?

I have not had any other vintages yet. I tried it based on a recommendation from Cosmic and it's fantastic. I've read that the other years are just as good if not better.

I think that the 2008 batch of Red Ribbon/Flake is still a bit harsh compared to the 2000 batch that they were selling a few years ago. I have heard the 1983 is fabulous (of course).

highplians, ghost and daimyo, great looking stashes.
smorgdonkey, here is my list of flakes that I cellar, some are more desired than others and some are difficult to find but they can be had with some perseverance, http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/cigrmasters-list-of-flakes. . I only cellar flake tobacco as it is all I smoke. I age VA, Vaper and Vabur flakes. All of these will age brilliantly and I will be smoking aged tobacco for years to come.
