Other than tobacco, should tobacco companies contain a little something extra, along the lines of Rattray's blend booklet, such as a tamper, coupon, details of upcoming blends? I personally think it may not be a bad idea to give the extra incentive for us pipe smokers to buy a particular blend, in order to receive a little something extra. I mean Cracker Jack built an entire and long running company on this idea, with bad product nonetheless. I wanted to post some food for thought, maybe just rant, on a cold Winter's day as I dig through a tin of Wise Fox.

Instead of a prize the tin could have jokes like Laffy-Taffy or interesting facts like Snapple. Of course the jokes or facts would be pipe related. If there was a prize I would like a decoder ring that would decode discount codes for future tobacco purchases.

At the least I'd like to see some card insert with info/history. I love stuff like that, plus I put that kind of stuff in my smoking notebook.

I like the idea of the informational enclosure, especially if it is attractively designed; it doesn't have to

be a lavish print job, just intelligent and information-rich. A coupon might be welcome, although that

does suggestion maybe they are struggling with sales. Trinkets might seem too cute. I think tobacco

is a sort of sophisticated-seeming experience, so a whistle or other toy might seem childish. (Also it

might be regarded as pitched to children.) Also, materials might be a problem in aging tobacco, if they

contributed to the flavor or deteriorated.

Hey! What's wrong with Cracker Jack?! I could eat that stuff every day!

Seriously, it would be pretty cool! You guys have some good suggestions already, so I won't add to that, but let me say that I think Scrapy's is the best! Forum member trading cards, we should do that for real!!!! Kevin, Lawrence, Al, come on guys, that's just a stroke of genius!

This is the funniest thread yet. As far as the info booklet I wish I could find that before I bought it. How about a recomandation of what alcoholic drink or food it went with. I know petersons sunset breeze goes GREAT with a rum and coke.

How are Cracker Jacks a bad product and how does putting a toy in the boxes make it the only selling point? I think they taste wonderful and really loved them as a kid, I mean the salt and sugar, come on, what kid doesn't love it. I always threw the "toy" away, they were always lame, even to me as a little child. Personally I feel that there is something patriotic about the brand, it somehow got really super ingrained into the baseball culture, which I was a part of growing up, now I wouldn't want to go to see a baseball game, even with free front row tickets. It's funny how people change!

I happen to still eat Cracker Jack on a regular basis, I love the stuff! It doesn't actually come with toys now, usually some kind of sticker or short history lesson. Kinda sad actually.

I believe hodirty meant the prize was the "bad product" not the Cracker Jack itself, that would be just crazy talk, Cracker Jacks rock.

Redeemable coupon points for discounts on future tin purchases.

Loyal come-back customers.

Yes that'd be great! Started pipe smoking in the late '60's I have fond memories of collecting Amphora points

and the $7.95 pipe offers.

I'd love to see something like this being done.
The old and celebrated State Express London Mixture included a whole leaf of the tiny Xanthi on top of the tobacco and the older tins even had a British copper penny 1d taped on the bottom of the tin to aid opening, can you believe that?

Too cool!
McClelland Grand Orientals Smyrna No. 1 replicated the idea by including a whole leaf on top too.
What about little fortunes, like a fortune cookie?
Trading cards would be perfect for the rectangular tins, maybe a series of artisan pipemakers? Or famous tobacco blends of the past? That'd be way cool!
The old cigarette cards that were used to stiffen paper packets are still highly collectible and of course have beautiful lithography, some of them are very unusual too, like what about this "how to", back when fountain pens were made of vulcanite?

Mystery-card-2.jpeg

Many had series of cars, motorcycles, trains and the like, or ocean liners, like this,

Most had famous people, like sports players, movie stars, soldiers, or fictional characters,
