The owner of the new pipe store in town keeps saying:

1. His pipes are "made from wood instead of briar" so they're better than anything I've ever smoked.

2. Tim West is the only pipe maker in America (said this twice, even after I mentioned the "made in America" stamp on my Wiley)

3. Reminded me on the way out, yet again, that his pipes are "made from wood instead of briar."
Should I? And if yes: face or gut?
Clearly I'm kidding but holy cow! This dude should've googled a little bit before opening this shop. 6 months old and I imagine another 6 months left on its lifespan. What a hack !

Honestly, I would say you should refer him to this site, and a few others. Tell him you are just trying to help him out.
He may get all butt hurt and whine at you, or, if he has any sense, he might actually accept the help. In the long run, he will appreciate you if he does.

Short answer is Yes. The smart answer is spend time with the guy and educate him. Let me guess; he's a cigar guy, right? It is probably in your best interests to bring him along in the pipe area. He'll be beholding to you and you will garnish points with him plus your influence will improve his store. There are worse assignments in life. smack him into pipe reality and it's a win-win.

No. He should be slapped, as he is not worthy to be punched.

Big +1 for bryanf, that's how I'd handle it. Maybe the bitchslap will allow his balls to drop and in the future you can move to a closed fist.

I don't feel that punching anyone solves anything, but a solid elbow/forearm to the jaw makes a hell of a point in a debate. Just sayin' :)

There's a very old, old cowboy type that bought out a Tinderbox a few miles away. Not one of my favorite B&M's. But, when I first switched to the pipe, I visited his shop for a real pipe and tobacco. I had done a little research online, and I was asking him about "natural" flavors, such as latakia and perique. He was getting frustrated because he didn't have but 8 jars of bulk and some Savinellis. He told me that latakia wasn't "natural" that it was flavored with chemicals to make it taste that way, and that when he bought the store that all of the tins had gone past the expiration dates, so he threw them away and would never carry any anymore. And, he kept saying that those 8 different flavors were all I was ever going to find, LOL.

Unfortunately, there's no IQ test to own a business.

Luckily I found a few real tobacconist closer to home. When I retold the stories that the old cowboy had told me, the other store owners just smiled and said that they'd been hearing similar stories from others and cordially just shrugged.
My guesstimate is that these folks won't stay in business long. You can't keep customers that misinformed for forever, lol.

You might also point out to the moron that briar IS wood.

Other than that, if he keeps up that kind of ignorant talk to prospective customers his pipe store will quickly fail, which is a shame considering the ever dwindling B&M tobacco shops.

Better to politely educate. this poor soul. Some of these older cowboys have been bucked off a horse more than they can recall. You can only benefit from taking the time to impart your knowledge upon his brain. As I mentioned his brain may be a bit slow on account of the horse thing. He might turn out to be a stand up dude in the end. If per chance that does not work tell him he should of opened a tac shop. If he doesn't know what that is , call the folks in the long white coats or possibly the men in black as he could be an alien run off the sky ranch. Happy trails, Pipetraveler

If I didn't already have an AMAZING B & M that I call home, I would love to help him out. However, this place isn't very nice, so I'm good with just letting him do his thing. I really only stopped into check out the competition. If he can get by with how he's going now then good for him...

You should not waste your breath on a guy like you described. He will be out of business shortly, I have seen plenty of guys like this who think they know everything and refuse to open their minds to the possibility that they could actually learn something from another human being. Guys like this fail at everything they do and always blame someone other than themselves.

I agree with cigrmaster. If he doesn't know anything about the industry, his business will go tits-up faster than a reliant robin in a corner.

Seems like I have had the same discussion at some of the B&Ms by me.

It is frustrating for sure.

Eff him. It's useless to waste any time or breath on such clueless arrogance. If you must resort to violence I vote for a swift elbow to the larynx so you won't have to hear that his pipes are real wood again as you walk out the door.
