I got my first at 42, a 40th birthday gift. I always wanted one but couldn't decide on a style. I work in corp America so i went with the upper arm where a short sleeve almost overs it. I went with the classic fleur-de-lis tipped cross. About 8" tall. Wife and sons named wrapped around with a sash.
no regrets........
My wife also wanted one and got a small Peanuts Woodstock on her foot last year (53 yrs old). She is now looking to add snoopy to the other foot.
I say Yes.....

One time this older lady wanted to get a tattoo to impress her husband. Since he was into Elvis she went and got double tattoos of Elvis side profile on each of her upper inner thighs. Anyhow, she gets home, drops her pants and asks her old man how he likes the new tattoos of Elvis, to which he replied, "I don't know about the two on the side but the one in the middle looks like Willie Nelson!"

Do it. Your 71 why not experience something else along your life's journey. Once you get inked you will always have a craving for more art to be done. I got my first tatt when I 16 and have 7 so far now at 34. I dont see a need to cover one's entire body but if someone wants to thats cool too, their choice. I'm the only one in my family that has tattoos other than one of my cousins who is covered in them.

Why not? It can be painful depending on where you get it. I got mine on the wrist, just below the hand and it hurt like crazy.
No reputable tattoo shop would give you a disease, they are really clean and particular over hygiene.

IMO, being art, a tat invites visual attention ...to one's body. That's just too ostentatious for me.
At one time I thought about getting a tattoo of a 3-masted galleon on storm-tossed waves, so I asked Mrs. Cortez about it.

She said she would rather see me get six-pack abs tattooed on my belly!

After I have my knee replacements, I'm thinking of having the "all seeing eyes" tatooed on each knee like the guy in the movie MaMa Mia.
Peck,

All I can say is WOW!

#1 - if you need to ask for advise, then you are not 100% sold on the idea, so forgetaboutit!!!!
Briar blues summed it up beautifully all the points to consider, they are expensive, and you need a good artist. In y city there are artists that are booked for 6 months at least because people come from other cities like Toronto to get this one particular artist. It will look good depending on how much you spend basically, no good reputable tattoo artist does work that isn't cheap. There's hack tattoo artists though that will give you good deals.

PS... Best reply so far comes from Peck -
I once dated a woman who had a "W" tattooed on each of her buttocks. And when she bent over, WOW.
+1
That was a great one Peck!
I have a single tattoo, acquired at age 18. I actually don't have strong feelings on the subject. If I could go back in time with the perspective I have now, I wouldn't do it. At the same time, I don't regret it either.
Puffy, I have a feeling that if you wait a few mos, you'd probably change your mind on the subject completely.

As noted by others, if you're not sure, don't do it. Also - if you decide to go for it and the piece is more than an inch or two square, have someone pick you up afterwards as the endorphin rush may make driving more hazardous than you expect (I nearly turned the wrong way onto a one-way street after I had mine done...).
This is the shieldknot that I had done on my left shoulder - the red pigment has faded some, as I got it nearly 15 years ago (and the artist warned me that it would require occasional touch ups, so I wasn't taken by surprise). I figure I'll get it touched up when I get a matching Thor's Hammer on the right shoulder. :D

As a licenced tattoo artist I have seen and tattooed many individuals who were over 70. Their tattoos were personal and made sense for them. However, getting a tattoo to make a point to someone else is a bad idea. Remember tattoos are for the individuals that get them, not for anyone else.

I wonder why it posted twice. Hmm. It was posted from my iPhone, maybe that's a contributing factor.
Edit: I took care of it. L.
