OK..Here's the deal. Now that I'm 71 it's more than possible that some folks believe I'm getting just a touch senile.Just to prove them right I'm thinking about getting a tattoo. What say you?At my age does this make sense,or is it just a silly idea?

I once watched a young man die of Hepatitis C he picked up getting a tattoo at a legal tattoo parlour. I strongly recommend against it.

IMO, age has nothing to do with it. The only question is, do you want an image permanently embedded in your skin - something you'll have to look at every single day. If you do, then it makes sense to get it. If not, then don't.

Don't get one. If your body area looses muscle tone it will sag and look nasty. Plus they are very expensive to remove if down the road you no longer like it.

Funny you should ask!
I just read an article at the doctor's office that said more "mature" people were getting tatoos since the skin is past the "sag" stage. Then it stated that if you are so inclined, go to a reputable artist since alot of diseases are coming out of the fly-by-nights. I'm just scared of needles.

Go for it Puffy.
If you have an image, icon, phrase, poem, name, or whatever, that is meaningful to you and you want it to be on your body for the rest of you life then I say go for it.

To be fair, this is the exception and hardly the rule. There are great tattoo shops just like there are great restaurants, if you research and interview your tattooists like you would interview the person you're going to leave your kid with you should be in good shape.
Here is a great article on how to select a tattoo artist: http://tattoo.about.com/cs/beginners/a/blstudio.htm
I waited until I was 37 to get my first tattoo. The theme/concept was important to me, and I needed to wait until I could afford it, and was damned certain I knew what I wanted. I did my research, met with three different artists, and when I found the right guy, and the right studio, the tattoo artist sent me home to do homework. The result of the consult, homework, and subsequent work was a tattoo that I love and am SO proud to have on my body.
Here's a look at me on the table:

Here is the finished product:

Two sessions, five hours, and I still catch myself looking at the tattoo two years later.
Go for it Puffy. Go for it.

TOTALLY go for it!!! I say anyone who's had the courage to live that long ought to do the things that make their heart happy (within the law of course). You'll probably get a kick out of the shock value to your friends too. No brainer.

At 71 years of age, what the heck right? My guess is any skin sagging probably already occurred. I have one, no regrets. But, I'm glad it is on my calf, so if I chose not to let it be seen, I just have to wear long pants. I'd rule out any neck or facial tattoo's...

Okay puffy you want a tattoo huh? Coming form a guy that has full sleeves, you need to REALLY think about what you want. Obviously your mature enough to make a rational tattoo decision and not just quick, "what do I think is cool this second idea." I've been there in my youth more then once and regret every tattoo decision I've made that way. I blame on it the U.S.M.C and thinking I was hard core. Now as of late I've been working on lower half sleeve based around a Greek god theme. Having a theme or something that has great meaning to you is the most important aspect of your tattoo turning out great IMHO. Hope this helps in your tattoo decision and with what ever you decide know in your heart it was the right one.

I have one, regret it now, only 36 years old, got it when I was 19, already looks worn out and crappy. Do what you want but if you have to ask for advice from others, I'd say no. I really don't like them now.

Dude, absolutely. And if I may humbly make a stylistic suggestion, go for something in the American Classic style. This is my favorite thing to see on old timers. As an example:

Or maybe go for a classic pin-up:

Or if you really wanna break the cultural norm, maybe new school?

Or there's always the pipe theme!

I'm not much younger than you, and I figure life has already tattooed me with enough scars and spots. I'd say don't do it.

From someone with ink: If you want ink, get ink. If you have doubts, don't. Don't let ther people tell you one way or the other.
