I was just looking over the invoice for a recent purchase I made from ... I won't say their name since they are a sponsor of this forum. Anyway, I bought a pound of Benjamin Hartwell's Evening Stroll for $39.20. Shipping was was, I thought, a little high at $14.11 (I don't live in China, for heaven's sake!) But then, I just noticed, there is a HANDLING FEE of $10.00. What are they doing to my bag of tobacco, giving it a full body massage? Forget about the massage and just ship the damn thing! The grand total was $63.31 for a 39.20 purchase! Jeepers that doesn't sit right with me!
The box cost them 50¢ and there was probably $1 to $2 in labor associated with packing and moving the package to pick up bu UPS or USPS. That's cost, and they're retail, so it gets marked up. Add postage to that, and postage rates have gone up quite a bit. Don't forget the "convenience fee" that a lot of services charge for allowing you to use your card online to make a purchase and even pay off a parking ticket. If you had to get in your car and drive somewhere to purchase that product, how much would that have cost you in wear and tear of your vehicle, plus your time?
If the amount seems excessive, just take your business to a competitor. Or, you can generally avoid most, if not all, of this by providing sufficient mass to the purchase by meeting their threshold for free shipping. Every dollar you spend for 20¢ worth of tobacco adds enough to cover the additional cost of landing it at your doorstep.
