Orley, don't know how "average" the SH pipes are, but certainly understand your reticence about shelling out for new prices which run around $260 for a regular smooth pipe. I love their shapes but could not afford that sort of outlay myself. If you like some of the shapes, a more reasonable alternative is to buy that shape in the Kinsale line which runs around $120 new. Though presumably the briar quality in the Kinsale line is of some degree lower than the SH line, I've found no apparent differences between my rusticated Kinsales and my sole SH pipe. The only overt difference then for me is SH has a silver band while the Kinsale is of different metal. To me, that's not much of a loss as I do find the very plain silver band on SH pipes to be 1 of their more mediocre silver embellishments compared to other pipes in their stable.
