Most of us I would say are familiar with Sherlock and his pipes, both the ones in the books and the ones on screen. I've recently been interested in the Peterson collection of Sherlock pipes in all their variations. While thinking about them (I know, dangerous thing for me to do), I got to wondering why it seems I've only seen SH pipes made by Peterson? Holmes was English was he not? So why the only tribute pipes for him are coming from the Irish? Not trying to start a fight here between two factions that have a shaky history of getting along, just wondering why no English pipe makers have never come out with some Sherlock Holmes pipes? Is there something I'm not aware of about how the English feel about A. C. Doyle?

Sorry if this is too many questions. :puffpipe:

Here's your basic guide to the pipes in the three series. There are color, stem and finish variations.

Chris, I agree that SH pipe shapes are indeed awesome. Just 1 example of Peterson's panoply of wondrous pipe shapes and why they are my favorite maker as a result. I only own 1 actual SH pipe, a rusticated Deerstalker, but own 3 rusticated Kinsales-the Hansom, Hopkins, and Watson shapes. The Hopkins is such a great cherrywood shape and is my favorite pipe in my collection.

There may be some type of legality with the Conan Doyle estate involved. Perhaps Peterson was the only pipe company that got the blessing?

I agree that the Peterson Sherlock Holmes pipes are wonderful pipe shapes. What I'm wondering is why has no English pipe maker made a Sherlock Holmes series of pipes? I would like to eventually get a Peterson SH pipe, but why would the Irish want to honor him more than the English?

Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and his family were Irish catholic. I'm guessing that is the reason Peterson has the authority in making Sherlock pipes. :puffpipe:

Maybe when Peterson signed up to license the names from the Doyle estate, they simply got there first, and managed to secure exclusivity as part of the agreement

I'm by no means a Peterson expert so please view the following with a healthy dose of skepticism, however, I believe the Sherlock line debuted in1987. Most of the large English pipe factories were in a state of collapse at that point. Meanwhile "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" with Jeremy Brett began it's initial run in 1984. With a 40 year gap in quality Sherlock show's I'd expect there would be significant new interest in pipe smoking. It's possible that Peterson was the only factory with the vision or ability to respond to this.
Of course, Peterson has had a vested interest in Holmes portrayal since the third Rathbone film.

It doesn't help answering the English question, but Ardor has made a SH series for a while, so I doubt it's a copyright issue.
Edited to add, I'm sure I remember a Dunhill SH from the mid eighties.

Lecha: Is that a Peterson 4AB that you have?

Sorry, no. It's a 309 with an AB stem I had cut. I'm convinced finding a 4AB would be like finding a Yeti stuck on the bottom of Paul Bunyan's boot.

Thanks for all the responses to this question. It does give me a little insight to why Peterson's are the makers of these pipes. The trouble is, I can't see myself ponying up the money for one. They just seem to be an average Peterson pipe with a Sherlock Holmes stamping. Sorry, I just like the older Peterson pipes better.
