Sharp Edged Peterson Stem

Aloha,

I finally got my first Peterson pipe. It's a great smoker, but the stem has somewhat sharp edges making it uncomfortable on the corners of the my lips to clench. Does anyone have a good remedy to this?

SH line uses vulcanite stem. I'm not sure those are molded. I think they are cut/shaped. But looking at the P-lip, I can see where it might feel sharp.

I have some Petersons on the rack, but I've never encountered a sharp edge on one of the stems or bits. I'd never heard of (or seen) a manicure block before, but it looks like a good tool for the purpose. I thought first of fine grades of sandpaper or a fine grade file.

I hope Peterson isn't getting slack with quality control. They make such likable pipes. All of my Petes have been durable, comfortable and well-crafted.

It's mainly on the sides of the bit that is sharper. It digs into the side of my mouth/lip when I clench on the side.

I must say it's an incredible smoker and I have no regret getting it. I actually want another one now haha.. It feels extremely solid and durable in the hand. Once I sand this down a tad with the block it'll be perfect.

For a job like this would you recommend going through the 1,2,3,4 process or just the 3 and 4? I've never worked with vulcanite so I don't know how soft it is.

Those blocks aren't very aggressive. I'd shape with 1 and shine with 2, 3, and 4.

That's not a QC issue or flash from molding, it's simply a thin-edged design.

Some people like stems thick-ish with rounded sides, others as thin as possible. It's a blondes vs. redheads thing.

Easily adjusted in this case in any event.

Makes sense. It didn't seem like a QC just based on how straight and well proportioned it is. Thanks for the info!

and this is why they make different types of pipes. Looks down right comfy to my eyes.
