I still do this occasionally. My findings are inconclusive. I'm not sure it really aids in the formation of cake or not. I do know that, at least for me, it does no harm.

In regards to a “cake”.... in the 40+ years of my participation in pipe smoking..... I have heard/read all manner of “gospels” about cake and it’s benefits/detriments, how to form/how to remove. But to me, cake neither seems to add to or detract from a pipe that is broken in. The only caveat is if cake builds up to such an extent that it infringes on filling the bowl to a pleasant level. That said, I tend to ream any cake present to a relatively smooth thin (or absent) layer as it helps my pipes seem “neater” or more clean to me.

Once I started tapping out ash as I smoke my bowls have started tasting much better. (and they were good to begin with)

I now have one of those ash trays with a cork in it... and I tap out ash now and then so all I have on top are the embers. Cool ash has to go.

I learn something new on this forum every time i log in, sometimes it blows my mind. I am now hearing that there are people who actually do not want to form cake? The other week some members were saying that you can smoke a briar pipe every day.

I smoke some of pipes days on end and wash after every bowl or two. I don't build any cake, or at least its very minimal.
