Does anyone else really here like smoking Stokkebye Amsterdam Shag (or any other shag-cut tobacco generally) in pipes? I know at least where I'm at it's usually marketed as RYO but having tried it both ways it's just so much better in the pipe.

I've tried a couple shag blends recently and found I actually quite like them so far.

Any recommendations?

Another vote for D&R Ryback and GH Kendal Dark/Kendal Kentucky/Dark Birdseye. Even the “Classic Cut” of the GH is pretty finely cut.

I just got some GH Kendal Gold #14 Dutch shag from SmokingPipes that I think is pretty darn tasty if quite moist in the bag. It has all the cocoa goodness of a classic codger burley. It’s a blend that has terrible reviews on TR but I found it to be quite lovely.

Kendal No.7 is my favorite shag so far. Kendal Kentucky may be second. No.6 is ok, but not nearly as good. Kendal Gold No.9 Coconut is also pleasant.

I bought an ounce of Three Sails last month, and tried it the other night, not expecting much because it’s cheap: I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I’ll have to try the other D&Rs now too.

Le Petit Robin is good. I find Reserve du Patron (ribbon cut, not shag) to be more flavorful.

I'm a big fan of Gawith Hoggarth's Kendal Mixed! It's my favorite pure Virginia by far and features a relatively equal mix of fireplace smokey dark fired Virginias, toasty bready stoved Virginias, and just a little dash of hay-like bright Virginias for contrast. It's got a medium nicotine strength, a smooth gentle retrohale, and is just an all around very mellow and agreeable blend. Usually Gawith's dark fired offerings will knock your socks off with their nicotine content, but Kendal Mixed and the spicier tasting coin cut Curly Cut Deluxe seem to be the two exceptions. puffy

Fantastic, I'll try that one. You've sold me on it. BTW, I also find the Curly Cut Deluxe a little on the spicy side, but in a bit of an unpleasant way, sharp and raw.

...burns a bit quick but it's easy to light.

My all-time favorite shag was Royal Theodorus Niemeyer's Flying Dutchman. Tobaccoreviews.com lists its cut as "Ribbon" but I found it to be more of a shag. It is easy to light and does burn quickly, biting like a cornered wolverine if puffed; however, if sipped ever so gently, it is a thoroughly delightful experience! Thankfully, I still have a bit in my cellar and enjoy it from time-to-time.

+1 for Dark Birdseye. That’s an underrated blend.
And there’s a restored version coming back to market, *with* actual birdseye, just announced by GH at a show in England last month. Rachel Gawith said on PSD that it would take a while to get to this side of the pond, but at least it will be the real thing (for those who’ve noticed that the product currently sold as “Dark Birds Eye” by SP has no actual birdseye leaf ribs in it).
