Guys, I bought a tin of SL after reading this thread. I went through the whole thing in about a week. It is indeed an easy to smoke blend that lingers on the mind's tongue.
SL will go on my replenish list.

As a birthday treat I opened up a tin of SL yesterday and finally had my first bowl of this much anticipated blend. In truth I found it a little flat. Mind you I enjoy some pretty heavy English blends and tend to find that a blend grows on me with time. Rattrays Red Rapparee is a prime example. I found the first bowl of the blend musty and aweful and now I love to savour the sweet notes in the background mixed with some spice from the orientals. In the same manner I look forward to more time with SL so I can get to know the ins and the outs of the blend. I am only slowly learning to appreciate the subtler blends. I look forward the cracking my tin of Skiff Mixture but will wait a while till I finish something else.

A few days airing out will benefit your SL, as is true with most of my blends. I equate this phenomenon with the way a red wine benefits from 20 minutes of airing out. SL and Skiff both occupy my Top200 Cellar, for all the reasons expressed above. I find the lighter, more Oriental Skiff more consistent from pipe to pipe. SL, for me, is curious in its variable tastes depending on the specific pipe. It ranges from good to spectacular, and I have yet to crack the code. The same variability happens with Full Virginia Flake - some of my best, in-the-zone bowls have been with FVF, while others are just ok. Best Brown Flake is a steadier experience for me in that realm.

Lestrout: thanks the the input. FVF and Best Brown are on my to try list. I have only recently experienced the variation in taste of the same tobacco in different pipes. McClellands Oriental 14 is a near enlightening experience in one of my pipes and not very good in another. I will be sure to try SL in the few pipes that I own to see how it changes. The tin note is wonderful so I will be interested on my feelings about the blend at the end if the tin. I am seeing a very good excuse to increase the number of pipes I have available. It really is very important to get the most out of my tobacco!
