Oldmooner, I see the point you're trying to make. I have a buddy Glen, in his 80s, a Veteran of just about every military action from WWII through Vietnam. Paratrooper and combat medic. He still smokes a pipe every saturday, but he could care less what he smokes or what he smokes it in. As long as its up to the task, he's happy with that. Now take his smoking buddy on saturday, also in his 80's, a veteran of all the same military actions, and an Army Ranger. But Al is the polar opposite. Been collecting Charatans Barlings and Dunhills since the late 40's, even owned a tobacco shop for some time. Both have been smoking a pipe for 65+ years and neither one is right or wrong about their choices. Glen could care less if its a basket pipe or a Charatan Coronation, but Al will talk to you for hours about the history of each pipe, the history of the companies, the subtle nuances of blending tobacco, and has a collection of pipes that some people would kill for.

Its different strokes for different folks.

One thing to keep in mind here on the forum, and any other kind of forum as well; If we didnt hash out every tiny little detail of every blend and every pipe, we would all get pretty bored pretty quick...

We'd probably be reading posts about Rasputins appendages in jars.

Even though my collection is cobs and Grabows and a couple Pete's, and I mainly smoke OTC burly's. I enjoy the reviews and discussions about the tinned blends and high end bulks. I have a limited tobacco budget and I smoke a lot because I enjoy it thus why I mostly smoke OTC's. I purchase 1 tinned blend a month and the forums help me to choose what to try. If there wasn't a lot of discussions here about pipes, tobaccos, and different aspects of pipe smoking it would be about the same as FB. What would be the point ? :puffy:

I agree mate. I made a thread about something similiar a little while back. I take most things with a "grain of salt". I value many of the members opinions here. However, when someone spouts off about a pipe under $200.00 being "merely factory made or get what you pay for, or similiar statements", I pretty much ignore it. I don't own a $200.00 pipe and never will. I am prob. also the only person here who actually likes Drum ROY in my pipe. But to each his own. Like I said, I take it with a grain of salt, and I like being part of this forum. PPL here are terific and it is a nice place to exchange info. I also do not consider my pipe smoking to be a hobby because I am a tobacco and nic addict. A pipe to me is a method of delivery only. Although, I am guilty of collecting many more than what I can use.
Ignore the Little things and enjoy your time here mate.

Since I have been coming to this site, I have not seen any snobbery when it comes to what someone else enjoys. If you enjoy an OTC out of a Corn, then by all means enjoy, for some people that is all they can afford and they are happy smoking what they do. I happen to like hand made pipes with certain attributes, shape and size and certain mfgs are what I collect. I also happen to enjoy mostly Virginia flakes and Vapers from what I guess some people consider high end house. I have not run into anyone here who has made me feel like my likes are in any way a bad thing. I have been welcomed with open arms from day one and I have learned a ton of good info from all the discussions we have. I for one love talking about different blends and different pipes and their attributes and maybe their shortcomings. I think we are all here for one reason, our love for the pipe and all things tobacco.
I am sure there are other places where snobbery is an issue but I personally do not find it here and am thankful for it.

I am a pipe snob. I am a tobacco snob. That being said, (and as I've said before) you can stick a straw in a dixie cup and smoke cat tails, I don't give a rip. If someone wants to get in deep about whether Lagonda is the second coming of Christ, fine, if another wants to extoll the virtues of CH in a cob, fine.
This is a welcoming and forgiving place, full of people who want to share experiences and gain knowledge, big tent kinda stuff, the less wedges driven and gauntlets thrown down, the better.

I get what you're saying and I agree... Mostly...
We tend to forget this is not new and pertains to every hobby. Think cars 40 years ago. Then it was which hotrod mods were the best. The chevy block or a mopar. A hurst shifter or not ? As a music lover I recall vivid discussions on which needles were the best for your turntable. Or which speakers.. Or beer (another one of my hobbies, understandably given my heritage ;-) ). People will go on and on which malts are better or which hops, or when to add them.
Discussions exist within each and every hobby. If there's no passion, there's no hobby. And that's fine. One can be a pipe smoker without pipes being a hobby. One can bea beer drinker, without giving a hoot about which malts or hops were used when in the brewing process. And that's fine. I've been known to chug my gallons in my younger days
Now, that being said, passion should never lead to snobbery. As Kevin said, neither snobbery nor reverse snobbery are tolerated here. And I for one can say this four has a listless of it than most other ones out there. Which is why I stick around.
Light up a bowl of whatever, in whatever and relax. Your heart will thank you :puffpipe:

Oldmooner I'm not sure I get your point. You think we're NOT supposed to examine the makeup of our favorite blends? We're NOT supposed to try to better understand what goes into making a good pipe? And everything that everyone does will always be OK? Sorry, but I disagree.
The attitude that everyone is always right, nobody's wrong, everything is great and it's rude to disagree is political correctness which I can't stand. There are some truly awful tobacco blends out there and some poorly made pipes. And just because someone doesn't know better or doesn't care doesn't mean the rest of us can't offer their opinions. Respectful disagreement is the key to discourse, and discourse is why we're here. Isn't it?
Well said bigvan. It is a fact of human nature that everything tends toward the lowest common denominator. Personally, I greatly appreciate anyone who makes an effort to elevate things above that...regardless of whether I happen to agree with their perspective or not. We only learn and grow through critical examination...the devil is in the details.

Some people get no benefit from book or movie reviews either. I may not come to the same conclusion as the author (forum poster) but I nonetheless enjoy the "point of view". I think you miss something if you deny any asthetic or art in our hobby.

Well the fact is that today due to technology we can actually communicate easily with each other and share ideas and opinions. This has not always been so. So people talk about what they enjoy, I don't see the issue. I like hearing peoples opinions about things, I may not share them but often it sparks me to find out more. If you don't like these discussion, what would you have a group of people that may share nothing other than the hobby to talk about?

If you like what you smoke then that's what you should smoke. Like me I dress differently then most. A flat cap, white t shirt, vest, blue jeans, and of course my cane because of the missing leg. And people look at me funny but I don't particularly care. Mostly due to the fact I could take them out at a 1000 yards but either way if me and my fiance are happy that's all I care about.
