Barbary Coast

http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1425/g-l-pease-barbary-coast
The finest cube-cut Burley, chosen for its deep, nutty flavors, forms a robust foundation for this sophisticated blend. Rich, red Virginia tobaccos are added for their subtle sweetness and complexity, while the unique spice of Perique provides added dimension. A delicate kiss of Brandy polishes the blend to a perfect finish. Barbary Coast is delightfully satisfying, with hints of black walnut, dark chocolate, and dried fruits. The perfect "all-day" smoke!

The name, Barbary Coast, came from my good friend Toren Smiith, in one of the most mind-stunning stream of consciousness, free association, brain dump emails I've ever received. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the perfect name. Thanks, Toren, and everyone else who sent great suggestions! The prize? You're lookin' at it, buddy! Fame, but no fortune.
Barbary Coast was introduced in March, 2001

STRENGTH FLAVORING TASTE ROOM NOTE
I've learned firsthand from our experience with the Crawl, not to judge too hastily. My opinion of Deep Hollow went from a 4 on the first bowl, to a solid 8 Saturday morning, when I was smoking a bowl at 0-Dark-500 on the way to a fly stream. It was down right tasty.
My initial impression of Barbary Coast has been very favorable. The brandy dominates but the casing isn't overbearing. I'm still not able to identify additional flavors but the mix is good, earthy and fruity but only a tad sweet. I did and do have problems with the burn. The bowl goes out as soon as you quit sipping and requires a half dozen relights along the way. I did discover that gravity feeding the bowl helps the burn a bit. Use the lightest touch in tamping to assure best burn. I suspect that drying out the baccy a bit will help but I haven't had the chance to test. I plan to pack a bowl before bed and let it rest overnight, to see if that helps.
But bottom line, I enjoy the flavor and find it refreshingly different than the other burleys we've smoked thus far.

Seems Barbary Coast isn't for everyone, but i tried another bowl last night and i got pretty much the same experience as the first time i smoked it, and i still like it. I don't know what i could be doing differently, perhaps its just one of those things that comes together well. I will probably just have one or two tins at a time i still don't see myself stocking lbs of this as i think i need to be in the mood for it.

Need some help locating the guys on the October list per above message. I searched for them in the members list so that I could PM them but didn't get a single return.
We need to set the October schedule asap so that folks will have time to locate their stash. Any ideas on how to get to them? Learned a lesson here. We'll want to have this planned out two months in advance.

Yo! I thought our group had already decided on VA/Pers. I could be wrong. Haven't been too active on the thread. But I thought a few weeks ago it was decided and my choice was going to be McClelland's Bulk No. 2015, readily available at most of our site sponsors. If we are changing themes let me know and I'll pick another blend! Thanks.

Escudo real good.

Ok when I started my first bowl of escudo I was a little disappointed cause I was expecting something with a powerful and strong taste but as I finished that bowl and especially when I started my second bowl I realized I was dealing with a very high quality and exceptional flavorful blend. First of this tobacco smokes like a dream. It rarely goes out so it can be slowly sipped at a very low temp. That being said the low and slower this blend is smoked the more flavorful and the more complicated the flavor gets. When it is smoked quick and hot it really looses a lot of what makes it so good. I have not really nailed down any specific flavors other than it is super smooth and mild yet still has a nice spice. For some reason it reminds me of a new paper back book. I guess the smell reminds me of the sweet mild smell that comes of the new paper pages. This blend is definitely one of the best I have had right up there with ODF. I give this one an easy 10 and have already ordered a restock.

Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) - Escudo Navy De Luxe
EDIT THIS TOBACCO FAVORITE WISHLIST SUBSCRIBE

A combination of full bodied Virginia from North Carolina and Virginia blended with Perique from Louisiana are the cornerstones in Escudo. The blend is pressed and matured before it is spun and cut into coins. This process ensures the unique character of Escudo.
Notes: Produced by the Cope brothers from 1870 to 1936, at which point they were bought by Gallaher. Gallaher produced Escudo until 1994. A&C Petersen began production in 1997, with the original presses. Now blended by Scandinavian Tobacco Group in Assens, Denmark.

STRENGTH FLAVORING TASTE ROOM NOTE
From tobaccoreviews.com
____________________________________________
I'm getting behinder and behinder with managing the logistics for the crawl. Work has been a nightmare for a week.
All the other tins I've smoked in our crawls lasted a week, with usually some left over. I'm already about to finish the tin, excepting a few coins I mailed off to a member.
For my tastes, navy flakes appeal to me more than most. I like their convenience. I rollup an Escudo coin, stuff it, light it, smoke it and it all just works. I love the flavor, the perique is perfectly balanced, the room note is acceptable, the vitamin N, just right, the burn is great requiring few relights, and I can't think what I would do to make the blend any better. That is a 10 by anyone's scale.
It will be interesting to see if any of the VaPers on next month's menu come close. If we don't hear from Sallow soon, what do you think of Orlik Golden slice? Too common?

Yeah! We have the menu for October. If Sallow shows up, we can make up his missed choice down the road. I know you guys need to start planning your purchases and shares. This will be a little easier on the pocket book this month as two choices are bulk. (Unless you buy in pounds) :puffy:

Now that I am done with my major costume making operations I can settle into a bowl of Escudo with everyone else. I haven't smoked my pipes in a couple weeks now.
Can't wait for next month's crawl. Mmmmmmmmmm, VaPers .....
I like that the Louisiana Red and Fillmore ended up in consecutive weeks. Like a face off of red VaPers.

Epiphany ... I didn't have one after smoking it for a couple days.
This blend isn't bad, but it isn't genius either. It has that English note to it with an odd cut that I can't say I've encountered in a loose pipe tobacco. I packed a few bowls and it does light well, doesn't bite and it also didn't have much flavor. The smoke was pretty dry and it was very light in taste. Like I mentioned, it isn't a bad blend but it is just rather bland on the whole.
It is billed as an American-English and that comes from the burley in the front latakia in the back mix. The burley kills it for me. I probably would've liked this blend better if the burley wasn't as pronounced. It is overpowering the latakia to a degree that doesn't make it unsmokeable, but makes it less enjoyable.
It's ok.

Epiphany smoked very well, easy, cool and no bite. However for some reason the heavy spice/ oriental flavor does work for me. It burns my mouth, throat, and nose. The worst offender of this was a bulk Turkish blend I bought at the beginning of my pipe smoking but also HH Sweet & Savory did not go well. I thought a Escudo would give me problems but the perique was pleasantly more tame in that blend and I enjoyed it very much. However epiphany was like smoking a spice inscent flavor and while I wanted to like it cause it was a different flavor than my regular go to blends it just had to much strength backing the spicy oriental flavor and it burned (note it was not tongue bite just a burn from the spice). This is a good blend for somebody that enjoys and can handle the spicy flavor of oriental tobacco blends but for me I give it a 3.

Epiphany

From tobaccoreviews.com
We have a delightful new light English blend called Epiphany. Epiphany is reminiscent of the original Revelation blend that was said to be the favorite of a certain reknowned thinker named Einstein. Epiphany is another classic Tarler/Runowski blend of Va, Burleys, Latakia and Perique in perfect balance and harmony.
Notes: Reminiscent of old original Revelation (not HOW version).

I know how that goes. Well, we will see you around when you get to em. The crawl isn't quite the same without your long and in-depth reviews on the weekly blends.
