Hero of Soviet Union, Semyon Nomokonov (1900-1973) was a Soviet Red Army sniper during world war II, credited with killing 367 Nazis.

Preferred Simo Hayha personally - greatest Finnish sniper and lived down the road from my in laws!
I don't know the answer to that question. I'll ask my Father in law as he knew him pretty well. Most Finn's did but I'll let you know.

The pipe is great, and so is his expression, his hair and the flowery backdrop.
If you've spent time in a post-Soviet country that comes from the former Soviet bloc area, you know how this can go south fast.

There is literally nothing offensive here, just a picture of a war hero smoking his pipe. The soviets beat the nazis, and this one killed over three hundred of the bastards. Its not a matter of opinion, it is history.
There are some pages in that history that better stay unturned.
No one knows if Simo Hayha smoked and I have asked around. I somewhat doubt it since the fellow used to sit around for hours in the snow waiting to shoot Russians and smoking might be a bit of a give away! There is a very interesting page on the net where a couple of Americans actually visited him to ask him about his techniques. From what I have been told he was a farmer before the war and something of crack shot. All his sniping was done with a regular rifle I have been told. But then it was a long time ago and the past is the past.
I recon in his civil life this Simyon was professional hunter supplying furs to fabrics
