Mastro de Paja dated their pipes starting I think in 1976 extending through 1982, years associated with Giancarlo Guidi, who started producing Ser Jacopo in 1983. (Ser Jacopo's are still made in the same facility that Mastro first used). You can also find higher hand Radice's dated from the early 80's. Starting in 1987, smooth Castello's can be dated.
So, there are alternative s for those who have years to go before they become old geezers.

Either topped (lightly!! ) or heavy removal of tar (and finish)
