Seeking Stokkebye Recommendations

Hi all! I’ve been smoking Peter Stokkebye’s London Export cigarette tobacco rolled into little 3mm wide tubes of loveliness for the last ten years, but I’m trying now to shift my tobacco habit to being more pipe-centric. Does anyone who’s tried it know of a pipe tobacco that might be close in flavor? PS doesn’t seem to have a pipe tobacco by the same name, but according to the packaging, the London Export is all Virginia.

Most of the Stokkebye RYO tobaccos have a pipe cut version. Did a quick search and didn't see an equivalent for the London Export, but there is one for the Danish, which is also 100% VA.

A non-Stokkebye suggestion would be Daughters & Ryan Three Sails. That was supposed to be reminiscent of the old Three Castles, which was an English 100% VA RYO tobacco. So it is probably in a similar ballpark

Awesome! I’ll have to check that out. Maybe the Danish too. I never quite liked it for rolling, but I could see it being good in the pipe.

Danish Export is a favorite of mine along with the Amstedam by Stokeby. Give the luxury twist flake and luxury navy flake made by them...hard to beat for the price.

The Amsterdam Shag was the first RYO I ever had. I remember buying a pouch on a lark and rolling a couple with a thumb roller I had at home. Woah! Never had anything like it, and for someone used to smoking marlboros, both the flavor and strength (partially due to the lack of filter, probably) were nearly overwhelming. I loved the stuff and went through a bunch of pouches until I found D&R Ryback, which was cheaper and still quite good. I liked the Norwegian and London Export too and would get them as changes of pace.

I’m not sure about flavor similarities but some blends that I’ve enjoyed both in tubes and the pipe are the Gawith & Hoggarth Kendal shags. Similar cut and the quality is there. All of the standards are great but I’m partial to Kendal Gold, Kendal Mixed, Kendal Dark and Dark Bird’s Eye.

Makes all the difference in the world. I’m getting good enough at pipes now that I can imagine them supplanting cigarettes for me, but a well-rolled cigarette with fine tobacco like PS is truly a thing of beauty.

I just got ahold of some of both. The twist is lovely, but I haven’t gotten to have much quality time with the flake yet.

You might enjoy Mac Baren Virginia No. 1 also.

I don’t much care for it, oddly enough, though I have quite enjoyed Mac’s Scottish Mixture.

+1 on the Kendal Gold. I ordered a 2 ounce sample just 2 weeks ago. Ordered a pound of it a week later. I will add the other three you mention to my must get list.

The first time I purchased Amsterdam it was the shag cut in a 5.5 ounce tub from my local Tinderbox and loved it. Bought a bulk 1 pound from SmokinPipes and it was more of a ribbon cut but still smokes just as good as far as taste with a slower burn rate in the pipe for me.
I also like Five Brothers when I'm looking for a little more from a smoke as well.

Can the GH Kendal’s be rolled and inhaled like normal RYO tobacco?

It’s pretty strong but I have mixed it in with D&R blends as a condiment. It’s much better in a pipe.

Good call! I rolled Kendal Kentucky and Kendal Dark successfully as well as smoked them in pipes, and the 100% VA Kendal Gold would probably be a perfect choice for someone coming over from the Stokkebye London.

I relied very heavily on Gawith, Hogarth & Co. tobacco when switching from cigarettes to pipes full time. Blends like Dark Flake, Dark Birdseye, Kendal Kentucky and Kendalk Dark have enough nicotine to satisfy a cigarette smoker, and a wonderful flavor as well. The biggest adjustment for me was the slower rate of absorption through the membranes in the mouth as opposed to the lungs. The good news is the nicotine satisfaction seems to last longer as well and once I got through the initial first few months I found myself being able to go much longer between smokes than I ever could with cigarettes. Which is nice when considering the difference in time commitments between each method.
