It's amazing. Washington State actually sounds worse than Canada. If I was living there, I'd be giving Oregon a real close look. Their brochures read "Come visit Oregon! A pocket of sanity between California and Washington!"
Now we know why Washington's budget's in the crapper: they're outlawing all their opportunities to tax the hell out of smokers!

@Simon

Now we know why Washington's budget's in the crapper: they're outlawing all their opportunities to tax the hell out of smokers!
As a matter of fact, I have video of one of the hearings and representative Eileen Cody specifically states that she doesn't care if revenues go down because she wants to wipe out smoking because it is a health issue.
Interestingly enough, I have been told she is a fatso.
We will be publishing this video when we put up the article next month.

I think I watched some of that video on the web. Is this from the attempt of the Seattle Pipe Club to have pipe tobacco excluded from the tobacco shipping laws (state senate hearing)?
I think she was the individual who stated that their research indicated that some 30,000 middle-school/high-school students in Washington had smoked pipe tobacco.
As for taxing the hell out of smokers...they are doing exactly that. But, of course, it is for our own good.
Edit: Thanks for the tobacconist info. Unfortunately, I already knew about both locations. :) Was hoping you found some place I hadn't!

I cruised all over Seattle today and saw a bunch of places with signs proclaiming they were tobacconists, but I didn't go into any of them. There must have been a half a dozen "tobacconists" with glass pipes, hookah and other stuff I wasn't interested in.

You know, Simon, Oregon isn't ALL that much more sane than Washington. Now, we ARE way saner than California. Of course, literally everything and anyone is saner than California.

Good luck avoiding the 200 dollar fine, Kevin.

Glass pipes and hookah seem to be abundant in greater Seattle area. Just about any smoke shop around has plenty.

I'm hoping that the next time I am in the Portland, OR area I will have time to stop by Rich's. It looks like a fantastic place!

Kevin, If you are still there a trip out to Fisherman's Terminal to visit the Kirsten Pipe Shop is highly recommended. If you have never smoked a Kirsten, you owe yourself the pleasure of having the absolutely driest, coolest smoke possible. They are kind of funky looking but at easy to clean and always deliver great smoke. There is a wide variety of sizes shapes, bowl styles and materials and bit colors that can be combined to make a pipe of your choosing. http://www.kirstenpipe.com/page_retailstores.shtml

Wow things have changed since I was last in Washington. I bought a pipe at a mall tinderbox store and fired it up right there and had a free bowl on the house!

Beautiful pics and great blog post Kevin. And it just makes me sad about the ban in Washington. Belligerent, already-wrote-my-congressman, gun-toting sad.

Richard - thanks for the tip. Read more closely above and you will see that I was already there. I went to both stores and the machine shop.
A feature article will be forthcoming, and I did acquire a Kirsten Pipe too.
Getting ready to board my flight at the Seattle Airport as I type this.
