Don't let the boss see these pictures. He might not sign off on your expense report.

LOL Winton.
Ironically, and sadly, I have not smoked a pipe since I have been here. I was in two retail tobacconists and a pipe factory today. I got a new pipe and some tobacco. I also brought 5 pipes with me and 4 different blends from home.
It is illegal to smoke anywhere inside in Washington state, even in a retail tobacconist.
I even checked with the Concierge here at the Hyatt if there are any cigar bars.
Nope.
All gone.
There is also a new proposed law right now to ban ALL flavored tobacco in Washington state, including pipe tobacco.
You probably know that as of last year it is illegal for any tobacco to be shipped into the state to a consumer.
Our man Carter is jumping all over this crap first thing tomorrow.
For the Seattle Pipe Club Dinner on Saturday, it is in a retail tobacconist located on an Indian reservation, so we can smoke there. Thank God.
Oh ... and by the way. If you need a prescription for some weed. No problem.
There used to be 4 Tinderbox Stores in Seattle.
None of them exist anymore.

It's a sad, sad day their in Washington Kevin, Let's all gather up some more of our hard earned dollars and send it to our politicians, for doing such a great job in representing all of our interests! lol Last time I was in Southern California, their was big talk about banning smokers from smoking in their vehicles on their travels daily, that's been some time back, and I've had no reason to revisit Southern Cal afterwords. When you get to the Resrvation, those folks know how to enjoy a bowl.

Keep an eye on those other prescription smokers, last time I was in Washington, I had one eyeballing my Ben Wade, pondering where to put the water and side smoke hole I guess.........

Hi Kevin,
Ahh, Washington state. One of the few states I've never visited, and NEVER will.
Let's see...

Nearly constant rain and damp weather (the western half) - hate it.

Coffee houses everywhere - can't stand coffee, even the smell of it brewing.

Can't smoke ANYWHERE, even in a TOBACCO SHOP! Insane.

Plus earthquakes and a volcano close by. No thanks.
Nope, can't think of 1 reason to go there.

Good restaurants? Got plenty in Denver.

Scenery? The Rocky Mountains are pretty spectacular. I can see from Pikes Peak to Boulder from my front door. 150 miles of mountains.

Ocean? Not a fan. I lived in So. Cal. for 34 years and only stepped foot in the ocean 4 times.
Well Kevin, at least you're just visiting. I hope you can sneek in a pipe sometime, maybe in the middle of the parking lot, or out by the trash dumpster. Enjoy.
Looking forward to your report on Kirsten pipes. I own several, and really like them. They're different, but in a good way.
Be safe and keep the faith.

All I will say is that I just discovered that a little window in my room actually opens.
I have a big smile on my face now and I feel more relaxed.
After I'm done with this little relaxing moment I am going next door to Ruth's Chris.

Be careful, Kevin. Those smoke police can smell one molecule of third hand smoke in vacant hotel rooms, and if detected, will bill you accordingly for haz-mat clean up.
Also, don't forget to hold up your napkin at Ruth's Chris, lest you splatter your tie with the sizzling butter from your steak. Mmmmmm.
Have fun!

If you want an excellent steak...try El Gaucho on First Ave (about a mile from the Grand Hyatt). IMO, they are much better than Ruth's Chris. If you are dining alone, however, you might feel a little out of place as the atmosphere is geared a bit more for couples. Alternately, the Pampas Room (downstairs dining in El Gaucho), has live jazz on occasion and is a bit more lively with the same fantastic menu.
As for the tobacco laws in Washington...you thought I was exaggerating, didn't you? :)

Seems ironic that a state named after our first president would ban a product I believe he himself grew on his plantation.

Wow, I was going to ask if you got a smoking room. Only on Indian Reservations ?

Scratch Washington State off places to visit !

There is a polite little sign in my room warning me about the $200 fine. I was thinking about going on a shopping spree and maxing out my credit card so the charge won't go through. Mwha ha ha ha!
@bytor

Thanks for the recommendations. I saw this after I already went to Ruth's Chris. It was right next door. They even let you charge it to your room there, which is pretty neat. I was dining all by myself too. They gave me a nice little corner where I could people watch.

No, but you know what they say about walking in another man's shoes.
It's one thing to hear about it, and a completely different thing to experience it first hand.

Sorry man. Not on this trip, but thanks for the invite. It is on the list of places I want to visit in the future though.

You mentioned visiting two retail tobacconists...care to divulge which two?
I'm curious if if some decent ones have managed to elude my searches.

Yesterday was devoted to F.K. Kirsten Co.
They started out as a maker of some unique pipes over 50 years ago, and they have two retail stores. One is at the Fisherman's Terminal and the other is next to the Pan Pacific Hotel. I went to both stores and also to their pipe making shop, which is also in it's own separate location.
The stores sell their own Kirsten Pipes of course, along with Savinellis and a few others. All of their pipe tobacco is bulk store blends, but there are some nice ones. It seems like all, or most of them are bulks from Stokkebye.
They also have accessories and a pretty well stocked walk in cigar humidor.
Today is work in the hotel for half a day and then half a day being a tourist.
Tomorrow, Tinderbox in Tacoma and then the Seattle Pipe Club Dinner.

Well Kevin, it looks and sounds like you got it pretty rough. Sorry. Wish you were here livin' the high life like me. I'll be dinning on a fried bolgona sandwich with chips and cheap beer while watching the Rockford Files.
