Definitely wouldn't want anything going in my bowels, but I wouldn't put a screen in a bowl either. I've never heard of any benefit from it. and even if there is some slight benefit, I imagine it would hinder you learning how to properly pack and smoke a pipe.
I am going against grain and I would say for beginners screen might help (until they learn a packing method useful for them) to keep an air chamber below the tobacco which helps with combustion, and it does not hurt. This is why they are sold also at tobacco pipe stores even if they are mainly used for different smoking product. I think to questions like this there should not be a categorical dogmatic answer, I think in doubt better to try than to avoid something it could have helped.
One thing which can also be done and I always do is packing the bowl with a cleaner in the stem down to the bowl which prevents the clogging of the pipe from a piece of tobacco finding its way in the stem.
I dunno, I think a screen in the bowels might make the tobacco taste like ass.Should beginners put screens in their bowels? My friend said it helps.
You are awesome. Thank you for the advice!Hi Ray ....... I will give you the answer of a newbie ... YES, the screens do help....
specially if the tobacco in the chamber is finely cut, and as a beginner, you
pack the chamber tight ... some pipers will tell you that there are proper ways
to pack a pipe, but, the "proper" packing of the chamber is irrelevant when
we do not have the experience yet, a newbie will always pack a pipe with more
tobacco than needed ... and will press the tobacco with the index finger as
tight as he can, we just want to smoke it ....
Pipers here are quick to dismiss a gadget that's really clever, it create a tiny
air chamber at the bottom of the bowl ... so your tobacco does have a good chance of staying lit, ... and also prevent the sucking of loose tobacco and ash
when finishing the session ..... And better yet, it protect the heel and airway from charring ... [I do smoke all the way to the bottom]
So, to the "experienced" pipers ...if you never tried, don’t dismiss it ...
[probably the ones saying don’t use them screens are the ones putting filters
in their 6 or 9 mm stems !! ]
When I buy a pipe, regardless of the maker, I open the draft to 3/16 inches with
my drill-bit, ... wide open ... all the way further to the stem ... my choice !!
at least to the bit-bend if it is a curved one ... so, loose tobacco get in
the shank ... or worse, in your mouth.
So the screen does work well in filtering the lose tobacco strand and ashy ...
I did started with a 9mm filter, but soon did discarded for the little screen,
every 2 bowls I remove the old and put a new one in place ...
Do I pack my pipe tight, ...... you betcha !!
Do I have to relight my pipe more than twice ... no, I don’t !!
Do I have a good technique for packing and smoking a pipe ... Hell no ...
Do I use a golf-tee as a tamper ... and tamper often ... Yes, I do
Do the little screens help me enjoy my tobacco session .... Yes ... the screen works.
