Your story is almost identical to mine. Started to write it off as ebay prices were through the roof and any drops on websites last all of 10 seconds, then poof! It drops in my lap.
Like so many things in life (women, jobs), it seems the more you want something, the more elusive it becomes. I guess the moral of the story is: Abandon all hope? Either that, or support your local B&M? Yeah, that one's a bit nicer to think about.

Haha, as Charles Bukowski says, the key to life is "don't try"
"You don’t try. That’s very important: not to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more."
It's actually on his headstone, haha. But you're right, I like support your local B&M better. At least when you can. Even when there is 120% tobacco tax in your state :(

....there is no doubt that rarity often ends up generating higher ratings that it should in the general population, but for some I think it undoubtedly results in a negative shift, due to either heightened expectations or just pure spite for the lack of availability. I'm sure with tobacco blends it is the same.
Indeed. Availability and price bring about strong reactions. I could name names, but won't! Same applies to pipes, I believe.

Ha! I haven't read Charles Bukowski in a while, but he's good stuff.
Pick it back up! Never a bad time for the Buk! His poetry offerings make great shitter books. Nice and short, and no iambic pentameter or other BS to try and sift through at 5:30 am. Plus where better to ingest the unpredictable and unexpected wisdom of America's poet laureate of back alley bar fights and degenerate drinking/gambling/smoking/womanizing/and beer shits.

I always liked his short stories, like the one about the woman with the scars. Short stories in general, I think are an underrated form of writing.
I finally opened my bag of Penzance to jar it. My God, it's not just crumble cake. It is THE CRUMBLIEST cake. Just falls apart in your hands. Fired u a bowl, and.... It's a nice Latakia blend with an interesting zestiness and a nice subtle sweetness from the VAs, I assume. Needs more testing. I'd be surprised if it ended up being my favorite English/Latakia blend.

Yeah, the short stories are great too. Notes of a dirty old man, hot water music, etc.
Tried mine on Friday before a fishing trip. It is certainly crumbly! I quite enjoyed it. I certainly wouldn't pay ebay prices for it, but it's right up there with my favorite english blends. Burned amazingly cool throughout the smoke, despite some initial excitement cadence abuse on my part. A great smoke to be sure, no singing angels, but other than SPC PP/PPR and GLP Maltese falcon I'm not sure i've had many better english blends. A great tobacco, but unless I fall into some in a similar way, and at a similar price point, I'll be making a few jars last quite a while, haha.

Interesting. I'm also a huge fan of Maltese Falcon, and based on 2 bowls, I would say I prefer it to Penzance. To be fair, I prefer Maltese Falcon to many tobaccos, so it's no insult to Esoterica. I think I prefer Bengal Slices to it as well, so I'll be taking my beatings for blasphemy now. I do like Penzance though! I figure I'll smoke through this first 2 ounce jar to decide just how much I'm willing to go out of my way for it. With the remaining jars, I'll break it out every few years to see how it ages.

Glad you got to try it! I’m a fan of both, but Sable is right with Stonehaven. Hot, moist air if too wet.
Penzance is definitely more straightforward and less particular. If you like that style, there are lots of similar blends. On the cheap end, I like Lancer’s Slices.
For Pease blends, I think Quiet Nights is similar, but sweeter and deeper in some ways (seemingly more Latakia than Penzance).
Enjoy!

I have tins of both of these here and ready to try, so good to hear! It's a close race for me with maltese falcon. I was very impressed with the way penzance smoked, cool, and with great body. My plan is the same, I split my 4oz into 3 jars, gonna smoke through one and put some time on the others. I've got some new (to me at least) virginias and vapers to work my way through first though, FVF, Cabbie's, some wessex stuff, and some Rattray's tobaccos. I'll come back around to english blends and give those two a go next.

FVF is picky too. Dry it out a bit (sorry for unsolicited advice, but that helps a lot with this blend).

Nice. I've been a bit surprised to see Rattray's has become so hard to get. Seemed like it wasn't so bad when I went on my pipe hiatus, but I guess that's the case with many tobaccos now.
When I originally tried a tin of Quiet Nights, I was going through my lat-bomb phase, and felt it underwhelemed on that front. I strongly suspect I would like it much, much more now. Will have to give it another go. Lancer Slices was the blend that convinced me I prefer Orientals with my Lat/VA. Not a bad smoke, but I really found myself missing that extra dimension.

Fair point. Lancers is sort of one-dimensional, but when I’m in the mood, it’s a great dimension!

Nice..I just got off the phone with Pipes & Cigars...They call me up to alert me of Esoterica

in-stock as to my March order that was canceled. This lot will only be ordered if the agent calls and will not be on-line. Only could order 1 8oz bag ( ordered Brighton) and 1 Tin of Germain Brown Flake.
