Since we're looking at an article and not the study itself (which would probably make most readers crosseyed with the scientific language) it is hard to tell how the data was gathered. I think people presenting this illness might not want to admit they were smokers, if they were. So I'm not sure how certain that data was. However, as I posted before, nicotine has been of interest to researchers for years, one example being a neuroscientist colleague of mine in my working life. I sure wouldn't suggest anyone change their habits based on this article or the study. However, when I light my pipe as I smoke in moderation, I do hold good thoughts. Virus are picky little devils, and it is not inconceivable to think that nicotine, or something else in tobacco smoke, might be a bad environment for them.

I second the motion. No food fights on this. It's an interesting subject, worth mulling.

I can only assume this is only as accurate as most of the other crap that is being posted about COVID-19. It would be rather ironic, with all the anti smoking Nazis, if it were true. Think about how kewl it would be if everyone started smoking to avoid contracting the COVID-19 virus. And antismoking laws were promptly reversed. Oops, I just pinched myself and realized I was dreaming.

The problem isn't the scientists and the data. The problem is the timeline and the ridiculous ways politicians twist what should not be twisted. There is a huge need for rigorous studies before anyone says anything other than "there might be a trend". My daughter is on the frontline working on C-19 testing and on isolating components of the virus to aid vaccine production. But she says it takes time and that politicians twist everything for better or mostly worse. BTW, she is not rich, not getting rich and will never get rich as a scientist and for her trouble, she has bruised facial bones from wearing masks all day, she has cracked, bloody hands from sterile procedures, and her eyes are bothering her because if she is not working with a mass spec (IRMas, etc.), she is working with various forms of microscopy. She is plagued with headaches from the stress and worry of being contaminated every time she steps in the hospital/research center. And I forgot to add that during this pandemic, labs across the country have had to shut down because funding has been pulled in the last 4-6 weeks. WHO has answers we refuse to listen too.....so you make your own value judgment of what the hell is wrong with our response, etc.

God bless your daughter, my friend. ?

Yes, when we finally beat the bug, aquadoc's daughter will be among the heroes. If we make sure these folks have what they need, including proper meals and a night's sleep, we'll get through this better. Bravo and brava to them.

I have proof tobacco is the answer. I upped my bowls to 5-6 and then did an experiment. I had a couple of pipes in the morning and then chain smoked a pack of Camel non filters. Then I sneaked in the icu unit at local hospital let about 10 sick people breath all over me and walked out.

That was 4 weeks ago and I have shown no contagion. Should I publish in the CDC' splay book? I could have the super gene, it s similar o the Magic Ticket. Anyone who want the cure is able to get it for free. There will be limitations, no politicians should apply. People who have multiple billions of dollars will get to keep one each. The rest goes into a fund for health care, paying our front line people. any one doing hazard duty makes 150,00 a year. Teachers 150.000, good government workers who are prove to be a source of strength in these trying times. Anyone who I deem deserves money, it will happen.

Strippers, high end hookers, low end hookers all the woman that for what ever reason gets money. Did I leave anyone out?

I think a lot of residual tobacco foundation money has gone into finding medicinal and/or other commercial uses for tobacco plants. Used to go birding with a tobacco geneticist who studied these things. He was also a high level birding guide. He'd go to Europe having listened to all the necessary tapes so he could spot the local birds there too. Wrote a good book about farming with mules.

Emily is
@aquadoc thank you for raising such a good daughter and thank her for us for working
to be part of the solution.
Thanks, Steve and Brobs. Apologies for the proud daddie post. She is pretty damn cool. My son that is a senior was just given an all-expenses-paid scholarship to BU to study biology and medicine. My youngest son also wants to follow science into medicine. We have been blessed in that they all want to give back and actually, unlike me, like people. I ask my daughter for a photo 3-4 times a day to show her siblings. They send her photos back. Here she is today getting ready to pull her hair under a cover to go to a meeting at work. She is a 5'4" dynamo and I am obviously the proud dad pulling out his wallet of photos. I apologize for the lack of piping discussion in this post. I will say she wants one of my pipes and a hunting knife put into the will for her. Annotation 2020-05-19 133210-gigapixel-scale-2_00x.jpg
