Vulcanite: a fancy name for rubber. The quality can vary greatly, but for me, lucite beats the best vulcanite hands down. Lucite (a type of plastic) is inert in that it has no taste, doesn't oxidize and if taken care of, will last a life time. I have some I've been smoking over 50 years and they still look almost new.

Keep them clean and ebonite will as well. I've had this pipe for thirty years and it's never oxidized.

Acrylic is more prone to breaking and cleaning it with alcohol can cause micro-fractures. The more modernly used Juma exceeds both with the softness of ebonite with no oxidation.
