That one is heavy with Perique funk! I could see how it would turn some people off, especially if you are coming from Captain Black. I love that funk, smells like dirty socks but tastes so good. I’ve made many tobacco pucks from that blend. I do have a feeling that there is Vinegar added to that one too.
I need to try making my own pucks, if for no other reason than to save storage space. Been hoping that C&D will spit out a 1lb block of Haunted Bookshop Cake, but that has yet to materialize. Now that's one perique blend I can sink my teeth into.

It’s a lot of fun and they fit perfectly in a those 8oz mason jars (fit 3 or 4 pucks). I made one of Haunted Bookshop long before they offered a pressed version of it, I actually prefer that one as a ribbon cut.

I don’t think your concerns about Latakia will be a problem, but I haven’t aged every English blend around. Mac Baren Latakia Flake, Dunhill 965 and the Sutliff match have all been great for me. My Dunhill 965 is the oldest, at 6-10 years.

Yeah, I'm okay with the latakia mellowing out a little and becoming more subtle. The changes over time were more so a concern for me with VA and perique containing blends (and Orientals, to some extent).

Concerning Vinegar, a good example for me of a 'heavily dosed with white vinegar as a preservative blend' was Mississippi River. I'm thinking this was a preservative as it's slowly diminished in the jar, which I wouldn't expect (maybe?) if it was natural. In my opinion, Elizabethan match doesn't have added Vinegar, but who knows.
