My dad past away 6 years ago and left a small vintage pipe collection. One of these pipes is either missing

something or needing a part. The pipe features a wooden bowl for the tobacco and a 2 5/8"" black neck

One side has engraved on 2 separate lines the words Savoy and Dr. Grabow along with a white spade

on its neck while the other side has engraved the words Aged Imported Briar. The pipe is not together between

the end of the wood and the start of the neck. I found an old box of Medico filters but I am not sure whether to

force it through the holes or whether you put it inside a metal piece that joins the two pipe halves together. If

there is a metal piece missing, do I need to get a period correct piece to keep value of the pipe. I also have a

few nicks in the varnish of the bowl, what would I use to revarnish those areas. This pipe also has a hardened mud

dubbers nest on the side of the wooden bowl. I thought since it is made of mud to just soak it in water might soften

the mud up. What should I use to get the black soot out of the bowl of a pipe. Thank you for assistance in these

issues. Any ideas on how to add pics? Regards, Robert

Once your photos are on a photo hosting site (such as Imgur.com; Postimage; Dropbox, etc. Photobucket), or on virtually any site, (including this site's album) such as eBay, Amazon, you-name-it, select the full sized image, then Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) on the image itself, then choose "copy image location" or similar words. Now paste that URL (the full web address, which should end in .jpg or .png) into the IMG box in the reply window of the thread you're posting to.
The site's album is also a good choice for displaying photos, and the same method works for obtaining the image's URL for copying into the IMG box.

Pictures would definitly help but from your description it sounds like one of these pipes that is actualy kept together by the metal stinger? You can try cleaning the pipe with hot water and a soft brush or do the Alc/Salt Method. You can read up on both methods here. If I understand correctly the Stem and the Bowl dont fit flush together? Then cleaning migth actualy solve the problem if there is a lot of tars and residue in the Shank.

If you don't smoke a pipe, I might recommend that you not try to fix up the pipes. What you see as increasing the value may lose value to a pipe smoker. For instance, if you try to clean the inside of the bowl incorrectly, you may lose some interest. Us pipe smokers are fickle.

Hiya, rk, & welcome! Definitely agree with crash, especially if the top of the bowl is messed up anything more than a little. Pipers tend to be real purists. For example if the rim is "topped" & refinished you'll get more [ahem] "negative feedback" than you ever thought could possibly exist outside the 7th circle of hell. :)

I don't know why I can not put my picture up. I right click the mouse button and cope the picture in IMG but the picture will not show up in the post after I send post.

You are missing a tenon. Savoys have had push tenon and screw in from my knowledge, and sometimes metal tenon and sometimes not, so without a close up of the two ends that meet, it is hard to say exactly what is missing. This could easily have a new tenon fitted, but is probably not worth the repair cost to anyone who doesn't want the pipe for sentimental reasons. I could be wrong.
