So I'm on the deck smoking one of my first favorites, Capstan Blue, and it starts to rain. I don't smoke in the house, I'm only 1/4 into the bowl and I'd hate to dump the rest. For the vets out there, is there anything wrong with leaving it overnight and smoking the rest in the morning? Doesn't SEEM like a good idea, but I'm too new to know.

Your going to get personal preferences, but I do this daily. It takes about half a bowl to get to work. I smoke the other half on the way home. I do clean the pipe in the morning as well as when I get home.

Some swear by this and some, but not all, call it DGT (Delayed Gratification Technique) but others have problems with it. My vote? Try it, it might work for you and if it doesn't, at least you'll know for future.

If the first suggestions don't work for you:
  • Pack half a bowl.

    Smoke faster.

Or you could just get one of these.

Nah, not my shade of green. Now if it came in a deep sapphire blue, then maybe 8)

When I have to get up and out early in the morning, I'll fill a bowl at night and give it a charring light.

The next morning I'm ready to go, and it works with most tobaccos I smoke -- mostly Vas, Va/Pers, and Va/Bur blends.

Yuk. I never save a bowl overnight. At most I'm tossing, what, 50 cents of tobacco? Fresh bowls for me always. If you're going to pay for quality smoke, you should enjoy it in my opinion. Stale half smoked bowls just taste crap. Why sit there smoking something second rate?

A few years ago, I tried this several times and I was not impressed. I found the tobacco to be stale and completely undesirable. Now as far as what Cortez mentioned, I have let my charring lights sit overnight and it seems to work just fine and with no foul taste.

Good advice, all. Thanks for chiming in. I'll give it a shot in the morning and if it's ... substandard .. I'll chalk it up as a lesson learned. Seems to work for some but not others. I'll post a follow up.

I can complete a bowl as late as 2-3 days after the initial light.

I know all 101 arguments against doing so, but I never had problems doing it with V. and VaPers.

Latakia blends, however, tends to go bad unless smoked with in a few hours after the initial light. Particularly Early Morning Pipe goes bad. Capstan on the other hand, I would not hesitate a momente. The pipe will stay on the desk until I want to finish the bowl.
This is of course purely subjective ideas. Ultimately it comes down to personal likes and dislikes.

Depends on the blend. Virginias and Va-Burs do okay for me. Usually I dedicate enough time for my Lat blends to where I consume a bowl in one sitting. I've invariably found the few aromatics I do smoke to taste like licking an ashtray if saved for later.

Clearly, this is blend specific wether or not it can cope with the mistreatment.
