Savinelli, Kiko and Kaywoodie

New here. Scouring eBay for decent pipes to try my hand at restoration.

Going okay so far. Four or five okay results under my belt. Snapped the stem on a Kaywoodie "500" that I'd almost wrapped up.

Here's the three I'm working on now:

Is the Kiko meer or meer lined?

Meer lined, yes. Liner looks to be in great shape.

Will the briar cleaner on the rim hurt it?

If you are going to buy estates and clean em up get a 40 dollar mini ozone generator on Amazon
Put in shoe box or steel lunch box
Works wonders
Even on ghosted pipes

That’s a bummer on the 500, was it in decent shape to begin with?

I’d stick with non-chemical for the rim of the meer-lined, and don’t soak to where whatever you use creeps between the briar and the meer too much.

I like the shape. Chamber is small cause of the liner. Looking forward to lighting it up.

Ha, I just realized - that Kiko has a tiny chamber and right in front of it sits a massive Savinelli Hercules!

Rule #1 of entry level pipe restoration: practice on crappy junkers first (I learned that one the hard way myself).

Stem logo is painted (or screen printed?) on the Kiko and Savinelli, the clover is inlaid on the Kaywoodie.

My cleaning efforts have removed the logo on Kiko and Sav. What should I have done differently?

Depends on what you did.

LBE deoxidizer and then polish.

Deoxidizer quickly washed away the paint

Got it figured out. Kiko and sav stem logos indented. Just gotta repaint once I'm finished polishing.

Many have luck applying Vaseline over logos before dialing in deoxidizers.

Thanks. After doing a bunch of reading here in pipe repair and maintenance, I'll probably forego the deox. Simply hand sand and polish.

Doing this for fun and to add to my collection. Not looking for showpiece results, just clean enough to be presentable for my own use.

I have gone so far as to use a retort system on some of my estate pipes. I think hot water is just as effective.
Micro mesh on my stems to a high polish at least once. Maybe some minor dent raising with a tea candle or other heat source prior to refinishing a stem.
