I like the Decatur pipe knife, all business and looks like it would last forever. A few of us don't ream ever, but scoop out the bowl then wipe it out with a paper towel or napkin that's a little abrasive. This maintains a thin carbon layer but no cake per se, and the full width of the chamber. This pipe knife would provide a thorough scooping for the purpose, though a pipe nail does well too. I have pipes that I've kept this way for thirty or forty years, and it really preserves the briar.

Also, I've read some have found water loosens cake. Not in my experience, but I go for hard and thin cake. So, I suppose if the cake on an estate is quite thick, it's also on the soft side. Anyway, just a thought.
The Ivan Riss is still soaking with a cotton ball Everclear solution.

Water did nothing to the cement like cake plastered in the bowl of this poor pipe! Once some of the evils are gone I will shoot some photos.
I will most definitely need to mud the bottom of the chamber as there is quite a divit in there.
Thank you all for your tool suggestions, I will certainly look into those!
