This blend has lots of promise for me, although my first 3-4 bowls haven't been consistent. The flavor profile changes a bit between and during smokes. I suspect some aging will help. Most surprisingly, I get very little perique. I was hoping for more. My understanding is that the producers reduced this ingredient several years ago. That being said, it *is* a quality blend, and I can see it growing on me. Right now it strikes me as fairly enigmatic.

Curious about others' thoughts on this product.

Funny, how smoking the recent version of HU Director’s Cut reminded me of this blend. However, Doblone is better in my opinion. In both blends, the perique seemed lightly applied with a decent portion of Kentucky ringing through with the Virginias leading the way. I find myself Doblone d’Oro truly delicious. Take a tin and stick it in a drawer for 4-5 years…then it becomes so very good indeed. ☕

I think it’s a very special blend. I’m still working through the first pile that I bought that was tinned in 2015 (when it first came out) so I don’t know if it has changed since then. It does seem to be very sensitive as to how it is packed, this hasn’t changed since I started smoking it so I doubt age will help. I’ve found that it really sings when it is packed as is, not rubbed out at all, and with an even lighter touch than usual when filling the bowl. Smoking in a wider bowl (7/8” or so) seems to work really well for this one too.

Good advice. Thank you. I had one delightfully sweet smoke a few days ago, and I haven’t been able to duplicate the experience. It does take me a few bowls to figure out a new blend.

And you’re right about the cut. It’s perfect for me. I also like that it’s rather dry.

It has changed, so don't go through those older tins. Smoke the new stuff.
Doblone d'Oro was created as a match to the justly fabled original Va/Per Three Nuns and as such was pretty damned close.
But like a lot of blends, the Perique was reduced to save a few pennies and cheaper dark fired was substituted, so it no longer has the balance of the original Three Nuns. It's still a very good blend, just not what it was intended to be.
I recently opened up a tin from 2018, and mercifully the dark fired had mellowed and didn't overwhelm the other components.
I'm saving my 2015 and 2014 tins to be parceled out when I want something truly special.

Jessie, I have a single tin from a 2018 batch also. Given it will be the only time I smoke the blend, what would you suggest “the best” age to pop it? (I’m in zero rush to get to it, and could happily wait another 2 decades)

Let it age a few more years and enjoy. It's fine now, and it will meld a little more over the next couple of years.

Thanks, I’ll definitely be savoring the older tins. I just did a quick inventory and not counting the one that is opened (and jarred) I’ve got 15 tins of the 2015 batch and 15 from 2018. So hopefully everything will be mellowed out by the time I get to the 2018 tins, which is probably at least 10 years out.

I finally bought a bunch of this blend after listening to Jesse for years bragging on this blend. I bought a test tin in 2018. I was shocked at the potential this blend showed. It came on sale at this same time and I ended up buying 35 3.5oz tins and just buried them in the back of my cellar and had no intention of smoking any till at least 8 but probably 10 years in the future. The price was very attractive( 15.35 for 3.5oz tin) for a blend that had that much complexity. Is it Three Nuns, I don't know. I last opened a real 3 Nuns back in 2012. I have one last tin of the good stuff so we will see.

Great stuff. I haven't had it in a while...have several tins aging. I didn't know the recipe was altered...figures...I'll have to check and see what year mine are.

basically the same. It's a really inconsistent blend. Which can be good or great or oh god why does it taste like that. Though I do really enjoy it but I have to be in a mood for mystery.

I'm a fairly recent acolyte of the blend myself. I never tasted the old fabled 3 Nuns so my heart doesn't yearn for it.
The current blend formulation is quite good. I really enjoy playing with the little raggedy coins. Everything about the flavor screams quality to me. It's bold, sweet, and smoky without being overkill.
It's really the closest thing in flavor I've found to one of my old out of production favorites, H&H Sweet and Savory.
