I have a Sav autograph that has a rating on the bottom of "G". I think this is strange because I have only seen numerical ratings on these pipes. It's an "older" pipe. Probably from the 70's. What does the "G" mean or indicate? I know y'all have huge amounts of knowledge about Savinelli pipes. I'll attach some pics.

Possibly Giancarlo or Genova?

I think @shanez is on the right track. Given your pipe has a wood accent, I suspect this may be a precursor to the Punto Oro Mister G line (conceived by Giancarlo Savinelli), but happens to be part of the Autograph line with the Achille Savinelli signature stamp on the stem that precedes the Punto Oro line. Savinelli pipes often have stamps that evolve over time.

I would say it is definitely not a Savinelli from Genova. I have several pipes from the Genova branch of the family that range from the late 19th Century to mid-20th Century and they are all clearly marked as being from Genova.

When researching my own Savinelli Oscar 604KS with a brass ring from 1981 I came across this information on the Savinelli website. I hope it helps in some way.

"During the 1980’s Giancarlo Savinelli had the excellent idea to add a ring on the pipe and so he designed his series: the Mister G. The new ring got so successful that it was also used for the Punto Oro. It was introduced also the Super Dry version (with the dry system) smooth natural together with a copper ring, smooth with a “fumé color” (natural with dark shades), natural color with a silver flat ring and sandblasted black with a gold ring."

No, I think it stands for Giancarlo as @shanez said and is a pre-cursor as @TheIronMonkey said.

Maybe say ... 'Historically important and rare Savinelli pipe, from 20th century, fashioned by Giancarlo Savinelli, proving generations of development, in sandblast finish with handmade briar accent ring possibly leading to the development of the desirable and highly sought after Mr. G series; pre-tested, near mint or better, collectable, pre-loved, museum quality, mediterranean briar, hand made, significant addition to collection sought after by serious connesseurs; from priavte collection' .... or something like that..... just a suggestion ... ;) :ROFLMAO:

In reality - much less poetically - the Mister G line was introduced to dispose of the excess briar, present in the Savinelli warehouses, due to the first pipe crisis. This is the naked truth.
The pipe had to be sufficiently cheap (all sandblasted) and with an aesthetic that could entice the future buyer.
I, on the other hand, do not like them aesthetically, but they have the particularity of being all made with the best Sardinian briar produced by the historic Nannini sawmill, now closed forever. So quality in smoking guaranteed.
For this reason today the prices of Mister G on the second-hand market have reached prices that are very difficult to explain.

Thank you ! 👍 I did not know that. I have an original Oscar 604KS (unsmoked) with the brass ring (pre-Mr. G line). Some say the Oscar line was a secondary or cheaper line of pipes but mine is natural and looks a lot better than many available today. Only the briar matters, the rest is a technicality.
