Hi!

I am very interested in getting this:

But I have never had a pipe with a filter except a cob. Can this be smoked without one? And without the adapter?

Thanks

Yes it can be smoked without... My first pipe was a Sav and it came with these balsa wood sticks as filters. I do think it cooled and smoothed out the smoke, but I forgot about them and rarely used them. Of course that piece of wood in the pic is a tamper, not a filter.

Thanks! Yeah, I knew that was a tamper xD
I just placed the order. Curious to see if I will have to adapt my puffing power.

I have several pipes of different makes including Savinelli that have a cavity to accommodate a filter. I don't use filters, ever, yet I wouldn't hesitate to buy another filter pipe and smoke it sans filter. I'm tempted to say, based on my experience, that they smoke better than a filterless pipe, as the empty cavity gives a slight reverse calabash effect, softening the smoke a degree. But that would be going too far, so I won't say it.

It's perfectly fine; the draught hole is still standard size like an unfiltered pipe, I do it all the time when I don't have filter handy...I never use the adapters. Really, all they are good for is making easier to clean with a pipe cleaner.

The answer is yes, of course. However, different pipes and airways may smoke better and smoother than others if they were designed for a filter. Understand, if you shop the vast pages of Savinelli pipes, and their sub-brand Rossi, you can find series that are designed without filters, which obviates the question. And many pipes designed for filters smoke equally well without. I find some of my Sav's have a little airy turbulence, so I use the adapter which focuses the air flow and restricts it only slightly. I would guess that the straight pipes might smoke better without a filter or adapter. Give it a try without, and it will probably be fine, undetectable.

6mm pipes smoke just fine without a filter. If you like a more open draw they will even be better than those without a filter.
The wooden piece on the picture is a honey stick. Miele in italian means honey and the stick is probably there for decoration. The honey-colour pipe looks sweet, I bet it will smoke that way too. ?

I have several Savinellis and love them, and I usually use the balsas. I prefer the draw with the balsa or the adapter in, and it's a little too open for me without either. That's subjective though, so if you don't mind the more open draw then it's not a problem and won't have any ill effect on the pipe. I find it easier to just throw the balsa away than to separately remove and clean the adapter. My experience was that moisture accumulated around the outside of the adapter that can't be reached by a pipe cleaner going through the adapter, so I felt the need to clean it after every smoke. PITA.

I have several Savinellis and have smoked them with balsa filters, with the adapter and without. I have settled on smoking them without either, mainly because I’m too lazy to dig into my pipe box to find the bag with the filters or adapters.
