Don't know about pipe boxes, but I see empty "old" cigar boxes (some as old as you can buy full ones at a B&M) at flea markets and antique malls all the time. Usually they are priced $5 - $15 each.

I seem to get a slight premium when selling mid-range pipes, particularly Peterson’s, when I have the sleeve/box. Most of my higher end pipes don’t come with boxes, but they have some sweet sleeves! Northern Briars leather sleeves are gorgeous.

I too keep boxes. Maybe half a dozen from Dunhill pipes varying in vintage from 1952-2004, a couple of which remain unsmoked.

My impression is--at least in a vague way, and particularly with anything NOS that's decades old--boxes can a add quite a lot to value, perhaps in part because the packaging helps persuade potential buyers that the pipe really is unsmoked.

In the fountain pen world original packaging is a big plus. But of course the only people who will care in any way are those who identify as "collectors."

I keep the boxes but don't use them, so I suppose the rational decision is to throw them out. I keep the socks; they take up little room. If I resold pipes regularly, it would make sense, but most of my pipes have been with me long years, some over forty. When I cull a few pipes, trading them for shop credit, I never send box or sock.

I keep boxes for any item which can have a collectible value such as fountain pens as it was mentioned. Mainly because I see the package as part of the complete item and second as it can keep an higher value (even if I never sell the collectibles I have).

Didn't used to do so. But my most recent Pete came in a nice hinged box. So, keep that pipe in that box. The Pete I bought before that-a Founder's Edition-came in a nice presentation box. So, that, too, is kept there.

I’d say it depends how much a premium you have on space. If it’s right, you’ll have to pick and choose, double up when you can and get rid of anything that’s not of real import. Most standard boxes can go but vintage or higher end ones should stay.

I love boxes and cases.
I didn’t keep them the first many years, when I bought a new or NOS pipe. But during the last 15 years or so, they are becoming part of my small, cherished collection. Whether new or old. Smoked or not. 84291F1E-842E-426B-8C02-4070CE946F4D.jpeg91FF90C3-5F9F-469A-B7F9-E845B6E0EBBD.jpegB739E6CD-F8C0-4F86-98C6-ED80A3041115.jpeg6FC9DEE9-B355-4946-A73E-FBAD189F5B85.jpeg80D264BC-FC95-45CA-8D03-E33874A04AF5.jpeg
