So we are getting ready for Christmas. Just finished making the Christmas cookies that we will leave out for Santa tonight. Then will be loading up to head to Grandma's for Christmas Eve diner. Well the kids came to me as a group and said they think Santa should get a pipe for Christmas to go along with the cookies and milk. So I have been desperately shuffling pipes around because my kids keep picking out my favorite pipes as the one to give to Santa. My kids have memories like an elephants and I know whatever pipe they give to Santa is going to have to disappear forever because if they ever see it again they are going to recognized it as the one we gave to Santa. They keep going to my Comoy's, GBD's and Stanwells, and I am trying to get them over to the Dr Grabows. I think that no matter what I do I am losing a treasured pipe tonight. My wife thinks it hilarious, evil woman.

I don't think Santa is pipe snob.

Leave out a selection of pipes so Santa can choose. Now, if I were Santa, I'd choose the Grabow. If you set out a cob, I'd take that too! Explain to the kids that he's a very practical dude. He'll tell about the last pipe he took with him that fell out of the sleigh somewhere over Poughkeepsie.

Hahaha that's really cute that your kids want to do that. Our four year old knows that Santa is the "mascot" for Christmas, and that the gifts come from us. She likes to play a long with other people that mention Santa though.
And yes, they can't see you smoking Santa's pipe. Hmm...

In any case, if Santa's getting a Stanwell, you really should get Mrs Claus a gift too. Have the kid's pick out a pair of your wife's shoes, and maybe a nice handbag too.

Adam, I love that your kids want to give Santa a pipe. Just today I was think about how the image of Santa Claus with a pipe came to be. After doing a little research on the subject I found out that Santa Claus smoking a pipe is a American interpretation of The Dutch Sinterklass By author Washington Irving in a story he wrote published December 6, 1809.

Here is a link to the story

I hope everyone will have a very Merry Christmas!

Sounds like "Santa" should leave a well-smoked pipe with a thoughtful note. "Thanks for the Penzance! It's hard to get at the North Pole, especially now that half the elves have AIDS and are convalescing. Signed, Santa."

The tradition in my house has always been for the kids to pick out a pipe for Santa to smoke during his visit. They will leave the pipe, matches and usually a Christmas themed tobacco out for him. This year they decided a churchwarden and some Holiday Spirit were the way to go. Christmas morning they always find a few burnt matches and a pipe with some dottle in it, so in our case he doesn't get to keep the pipe but appreciates the use of one of my pipes during his smoke break here.

This is the best thing ever! But I understand your worry for losing a treasured pipe. I like Tuold's idea...
Leave out a selection of pipes so Santa can choose
Definitely. That way you can sneak in a pipe or two you really wouldn't miss all that much, and Santa can "choose" one of them.

... Twas the nite before Christmas...
So, Santa had the 'stump of a pipe' in his mouth, what on earth does that mean?
And what was he doing making 'such a clatter' in the yard? Did he miss the house and crash? I bet so.
