I have two identical Savinelli Punto Oro Gold 106's. One is smooth and one is sandblasted. After a few years with each, I can say they have always tasted the same. But tonight I will compare them again, you know, for science.
Out of all of those 904/9+4/9004/9005s with Giubileo d'Oro, Punto Oro, Corallo di Mare, Deluxe, etc. stamps, they all tasted the same unless ghosted by another blend.

Blanket rules like sandblasted vs smooth taste make no sense to me. There are too many other variables, drilling, chamber shape, the characteristics of that block of briar, not mention variability of blend batches, to allow for anything like this to be meaningful. This feels to me more like suggestion than any quantifiable reality.

But this is as good as any to add to the list of pipe myths.

Are all of the pipes smoked enough that the bowl coating, and/or the raw briar is not affecting taste? To be safe, each pipe should have been through 20 bowls minimum.

I don't think it has anything to do with sandblast vs smooth or black vs brown, but I believe it has to do with the briar itself. As mentioned in a previous post.

I have a Savinelli 616 KS Trevi (black, sandblast), and a Savinelli 616 KS Onda (brown, smooth), and both pipes smoke identical when it comes to smoke ability and flavor when smoking the same tobacco.

During my years of smoking pipes, I've found different pipes will smoke different blends better than others. I found that my Savinelli 645 bent apple short pipe smoked Mississippi River better than any of my other briars. Not to say the other ones were bad or the flavor was muted, but for me I just enjoyed that blend in that pipe more than any other, so I dedicated that pipe to that blend.

So your black sandblasted pipes may be perfectly fine; however, your non-black sandblasted pipes are just better smokers with the blends you're smoking.

Hi Guys,

I've notice that all my sandblasted pipes (different makers) wich are all black sandblast, have a different flavour than my normal briars.

The taste is duller than the normal briars, especcialy the ones that have a pre coating (tried even removing it, nothing change).

Maybe is the black dye I'dont know, it's a shame because i love them but they are so dull and flavorless.

Any of you experience the same thing or I'm going crazy?

Thank you
I just tested this with my two identical pipes, one smooth and one sand blasted. I can say that the pipes themselves taste the same. The only difference I can detect is old tobacco ghosts.

That may be the difference you notice. Some old tobacco flavors go good together, and some don't.

But if I must, I'll keep smoking them till I find a difference! ...for science. puffy

It's all bout science! Tiny samples prove nothing, unless repeated again and again, with the same results.

all I can venture to guess is that the people who insist that rusticated and sandblasts smoke marginally cooler might be right. I find if I smoke really slow and super cool like dragging two hours out of an average sized chamber it is dull and the flavor is flatter. Maybe that's what's happening.
Also I find that part of how I smoke a pipe can change due to subtle reasons that have more to do with my perception. For example I want to smoke a churchwarden faster and harder then smaller pipes. I have to remind myself not to do that.

You actually tested this lunacy?! Admirable; a better man than I.

As long as you're open minded and game, perhaps you'll check out something I've noticed:

On Tuesdays and Fridays whatever I smoke seems to have a subtle essence of Belgian rutabaga on the finish. Cannot detect it on the other five days (I do, however, note just the merest touch of Thai [wait a minute...sniff, sniff...] make that Laotian pork spring rolls on Mondays and Wednesdays, but don't want to add too many variables).

If anyone else has noted this or is willing to experiment, please post your thoughts.

I noted the slight but distinct aroma of coffee with a pipe this morning...
It was probably the blend I chose...
If I'm lucky I'll check again tomorrow puffy
