Hi Guys,

I've notice that all my sandblasted pipes (different makers) wich are all black sandblast, have a different flavour than my normal briars.

The taste is duller than the normal briars, especcialy the ones that have a pre coating (tried even removing it, nothing change).

Maybe is the black dye I'dont know, it's a shame because i love them but they are so dull and flavorless.

Any of you experience the same thing or I'm going crazy?

Thank you

You're going crazy.

But that's OK. You're in good company.

Thank you Cosmic, you are the the one whoalways try to help me ?
:::sigh::: ok... seeing how all of the sandblasted pipes are made by different makers. You didn't say how many. Are we talking about two or 12?
Maybe, try to come up with all of the ways the sandblasts are alike... did they all have bowl coatings? Did they all come from the same vendor on ebay?
Then compare/contrast them to the "normal" pipes. What is normal?

I'm absolutely certain that there is no rhyme or reason behind this. I am certain that the finish nor the color of stain can affect the taste, unless they were all painted that color inside the bowl, or all have the same bowl coatings. If they were all Petersons, your tastes my be more verifiable. But...

This all could be from a childhood psychosis. Did you ever get bitten by a black poodle as a kid? Hmmmmm...

As I recall, the late Bruce Cahn, aka @foggymountain, the famed Dunhill collector, said different Dunhill finishes taste different.

They are 5 different brands (new and estates), bought all from different sellers and 1 local tobacconist. 3 have the black bowl coating, but also some of my normal briars have it and the taste is always different than the black sandblasted. Cant talk about other sandblast colors because i only have black sandblasted, since i love black.

Even I don't think there is a reason, but I've tested and smoked quite a bit, and I can say that they all 5 of them reduce the flavour of the tobacco about 20% or 30% which is a lot for me.

Also I have a non-sandblasted Ebony Peterson and also that pipe reduce the flavour but not so much as the sandblasted.

Maybe is the black dye that is very heavy and don't let the pipe breathe, i dont know

I have about six black finish sandblast pipes -- Parker, Rossi, Johs -- and they all deliver flavor in abundance as well as pipes that have different finishes than those. Maybe you just dislike the black finish, or the blast, and find the blends less appetizing in them. The visual component in smoking, like food, is strong.

I really can't see how the black dye would be any different than brown for example. Leather dye and such is concentrated enough with most colors so I doubt that it would make a difference at all. Are there any similarities with the pipes other than the finish? Stems? FIlters?

they are all straight billiard wich is the only shape I smoke (I know im boring). No filters like all my pipes.

I should try with another sandblast color, but it's some time that, for this very problem I don't buy any more sandblasted pipes wich is a shame because they are splendid.
