I'll have to respectfully disagree here. My stock of Gawith blends from 2017 vs 2019 vs 2021 have been dramatically different. Coniston Cut Plug, for example, is hardly a Lakeland blend anymore.
I go through at least a 500g bag of CCP every 6-9 months. Tastes the same to me as it did back when Chip brought it in prior to his company (Sheffield Exchange) being acquired by Arango circa 2007. The next time it drops, try a few ounces. Laudisi has, so far, gotten the goods out quickly and, going by date codes, fresher than I have seen in years. The less said about SG's distribution the better

@vosBghos, I’ll send you a few flakes of 1792 at no cost to sample if you wish. Just PM me.
Like it or don’t like it, everyone should at least get the chance to try it.
Stuff is good but stout. Puts me on my arse even when fully fed, unless smoked in the smallest bowl I have.

1792 is not a Lakeland for two key points:
  • DFK is the major component, while most "Lakelands" are largely Imperial Virginia (Coniston Cut Plug is the exception), but more importantly,
  • its flavouring is tonka bean, while Lakelands have complex sauces with a defining top note
Regarding anything similar out there, no idea. I've tried a couple of tobaccos supposedly flavoured with tonka bean and nothing came close. Lakeland Dark does taste similar and is just as strong, so most likely it is the same blend without tonka.

Is it older than Capstan?
If the date is to be believed then yes, by about a hundred years.
Up until the 80's/90's (?) it was known as 'Cob Flake'. For some reason the plug form retains the original name but not the flake. Funnily enough, cracked open a 15 year old tin last night.
Along with a dram of Grouse whisky, it was rather glorious!
