While looking around for the oldest pipe tobacco still in production I came across this.
I have really enjoyed many G&H blends and ai have some S&G squadron Leader and Navy flake on the way. But the 1792 so far has eluded me, some pipers on here have assured me that there will be drop in the fall? But I’m really interested in what this flake tastes like is there anything to compare it to , or is it a whole mother animal?

It was SG's Lakeland blend. Lakeland Dark used to be comparable, more flavor less nicotine I think (can't remember now).

Gawtih Hoggarth used to make more Lakeland blends, but now post-merger we'll see how the blends change moving forward.

The recent drops have already been VERY light of the lakelands 'sauce'.

1792 Flake is a very strong, but not bitey, virginia/dark fired Kentucky flake topped with a Lakeland essence.
Because of the Lakeland character, it is somewhat unique among VA -Bu flakes. I like it a lot, but not everyone likes the strong nic hit it gives you. This flake requires some delights and frequent light tamping, but it is worth it if you can locate it. Imagine Full Virginia Flake with DFK and Lakeland topping.

Yep, each progressive year they get lighter on the flavoring. Two drops ago the Ennerdale I got is barely floral at all. Lakeland glory is a thing of the past. I've got blends from 2015 (1792, Ennerdale, etc) that are much stronger that the recent version.

The merger was at least six years ago. Time enough to tell.. I have been smoking GH since the mid 1980`s Nothing has changed that I can tell, casing sauce wise. SG is, though, very dependent on it being fresh enough that the topping doesn't flash off,, which has been an issue with the tins, hopefully solved by now. YMMV.

Lakeland Dark is supposedly 1792 without Tonquin. Sam's Flake and KC Flake also have Tonquin

Anything containing the name Gawith can be elusive.

I have a jar of 1792 that I am rationing because I do not know when I'll be able to replace it.

St. Bruno RR shares a lot of characteristics with it and is MUCH easier to come by.

Damn, I think I need some Bruno right now!!

I still have about 75% of a 2005 tin of 1792 Flake that I occasionally smoke. By this time most of the tonquin topping is gone, but I love the strong flavor of the tobaccos.

If you like English blends, have you tried GLP Abingdon, Westminster, Quiet Nights or Chelsea Morning? I'm not an english fan but Pease makes quality English blends that are always available.
I have some quiet nights I have yet to crack , but by the looks of it the1792 is significantly stronger , and has a tonquin bean going on? I have heard GL makes quality stuff but now I’m really interested thanks

I'll have to respectfully disagree here. My stock of Gawith blends from 2017 vs 2019 vs 2021 have been dramatically different. Coniston Cut Plug, for example, is hardly a Lakeland blend anymore.

Indeed. I think he may be the only member of several forums that I belong to claiming nothing has changed.

It seems that the Lakeland producers also have an issue with significant variations of "sauce" applied per batch which could account for everyone's differing experiences.

I remember several of you indicating that during our creation of the "Lakeland Scale" thread.

Similarity in complaints have been too widespread over the past couple of years to be just variation.
