He's a damn good singer. More and more I listen to him, his style and expression are just amazing. Don't get me wrong. I think Dino's great. Never cared much about the chairman. But more credit should be given to Sammy.

Fast draw artist, heck of a dancer, a fast quipping comedian, good singer and did it all with one eye! Easily the most talented member of the "Pack." But, some personal he made over the years adversely impacted his popularity (lotta race hatred in those days). One of his marriages and his religious conversion impacted is popularity. Never the less, his Vegas shows were must see. Even "Rat Pack" members didn't miss his Vegas stints.

There’s a doc on him my wife and I watched. Maybe it’s PBS American Masters. It was very interesting. He took criticisms in his life for various reasons. He came from nothing. I’m fascinated with these self-taught vaudeville performers. He was a massive star who went through a lot. He loved bling. He would walk down 5th ave and just buy stuff. He was a massively talented man.

His family would take umbrage with that. He started learning as a wee youth performing with his highly talented family in notable theaters and resorts. Formal education was sadly lacking but, training in dance, timing, singing ... he was well trained starting while almost a babe in arms, 2 years old. The man known as Bojangles was his tap teacher. He was well taught and prepared to be a sensational entertainer by family and friends.

I forgot. It’s all in that American Masters doc

There’s a song by my friends, Leonard Phillips and Stan Lee (original members of the Dickies) about Sammy Davis, Jr. called “Where Did His Eye Go?” from their second album Dawn of the Dickies (1979):

Well, he used to be the star of stage and screen
But now he only sees half of everything
A funny little man with the straight black hair
He lost it in an accident, but he doesn’t care

And where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But nothing can stop him now

I saw him late last night on the telethon
He’s doing “Candy Man” with his glasses on
And then I saw him sing “What Kind of Fool Am I?”
He whipped off his glasses, and I looked at his eye

But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But nothing can stop him now

We really love that boy
He brought us so much joy
He even used to be a goy
But things are different now
And I’m still wonderin’ how
He’ll keep an eye out for me now and then

But does he see in 3D?
(Where did his eye go?)
But is it lookin’ at me?
(Where did his eye go?)
But is it lookin’ at me?
(Where did his eye go?)
But is it lookin’ at me?
(Where did his eye go?)

Yeah, but where’d his eye go?

Yeah, he used to be the star of stage and screen
But now he only sees half of everything
He was a funny little man with straight black hair
He lost it in an accident, but he doesn’t care

So, where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But nothing can stop him now
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But where’d his eye go?
I don’t know
But nothing can stop him now

I don’t know ...
