Hi Rothnh, I must admit that the Full VF is the probably the one where I have to agree with you that the first flakes from a new tin are a "pig" to get going. I have just never considered taking a drier to my tobacco or laying the flakes out to dry. I have always accepted that that's how FVF was. The next time I pick up a tin I shall give it a try.
Do you find drying the flake further improves the flavour of the tobacco?

You know, you’re probably right in everything you say. but.....
I just wonder why the flake is made this way, I am sure that with their centuries of experience, they don't produce a moist flake for no good reason other than to boost the sales of tobacco driers.

The moist SG flakes can be an issue in humid climates ( such as Coastal SC ). When I lived in South-Central Alaska ( Anchorage, cold desert basically ) they didn't require as much care. Still, I'd rather dry out baccy than have to rehydrate.

I usually pre-load a couple fold-and-stuff bowls to smoke later ....

puff, I would guess that SG leaves them moister than others because it may help with the aging process of their Virginia blends. It's the only thing I can think of, I am a HUGE lover of Full Virginia Flake and Medium Virginia Flake (Golden Glow). MVF (GG) is my "go to VA because it's far easier to light and FVF is what I smoke when I want to really relax and take my time at it. I find that if I don't dry them enough, it does end up not tasting nearly as good as it is a hot, wet, smoke. I just leave them open on a piece of paper for like the entire day on a day that isn't too humid (can be so humid that it won't dry).

I want to like FVF. I really do. And I've had at least one sublime experience with it. But it's Such A Pain in The Ass. I just can't get over it. It agitates me. And that's not what I want from a sit-down with a pipe. Especially when there are so many other excellent VA flakes out there.

A moist flake is heavier than a dry flake. And 50g is 50g. Call me a cynic.
Exactly my gut feeling also....

Probably, it all boils down to a question of business policies.

Well, for me, this tread has been very interesting. Thanks to all of you! Continue debating, I enjoy reading your views and methods.
I have still not decided, but I think I'll give SG a last try, Going to this length and extreme to get the tobacco burning indicates to me, that the tobacco actually is of great quality. We'll see...
